17 years ago a first grade student of mine was in Florida to watch the launch of Challenger. She was related to Christa Mcauliffe and after the launch her family was going to join Christa's huband and children on a trip to DisneyWorld. Needless to say it was an extremely truamatic experience for my student and her family. My student brought me back a patch with the names of the 7 astronauts and a charm that says Teacher in Space. Now 17 years seems like only yesterday.....

Cannot believe that History has repeated itself again.........:(

I remember my youngest was in pre-school at the time. It's one of those "where were you when..." memories. How incredibly sad.

I was teaching that day. I'll never forget the shock when a parent told us what had happened and again when I went home and saw the video. I feel that same sick feeling in my stomach today. :(

on Christmas day 1985 my mother died from breast cancer. Just a month later the Challenger exploded. For some reason, I felt worse when the shuttle exploded. I was in agony and couldn't explain why. The I saw that first teacher in space from here in NH and her children, so young without their mother. I knew the pain of losing a mother - still fresh in my heart. At least I had a mother for all those years and they were so very young.

Today when I heard, the pain was not as bad but I still feel so terrible for those families. So brave to do so much.
