Forgive me if this is the wrong board. We just joined DVC last week (we're technically in our 10 day window to back out) and I have a question about the Florida residency. We were told we'd get Florida resident rates if we decide to buy an annual pass for WDW. Does anyone know if the FL residency rate also applies to Disney cruise line?

If you don't live in Florida, you don't get Florida discounts. You may get a DVC discount that is the same money amount as a Florida discount but you aren't entitled to Florida rates.

Some confuse this with a legal residency issue and it isn't. It's simply what Disney has decided to allow vs not. The POS specifically states that DVC membership does not qualify one for FL resident benefits. I'd cancel and investigate more while you still have the opportunity.

We didn't sign up for the cruise benefits as we're aware it's not the best use of the points. They just mentioned the annual pass cost is the same for Florida residents.

It's not that DVC gets Florida resident discount, they don't. Currently DVC is allowed to purchase the Gold AP and FL residents are the only other group allowed to purchase it too. It does not mean that DVC gets any Floridia resident discounts - it just means that DVC get to purchase the Gold AP.

Florida residents actually also have a couple other passes they are eligible to buy - Silver and an Epcot after 4. Maybe another one too but DVC members do not have access to those.

And, really, DVC doesn't get cruise discounts.
Quite the reverse, they're overcharged IMO. That's true whether it's the member cruise on cash or any cruise on points. Historically it's been about 10% of rack rate at best which is considerably more than early booking discounts.

I'd cancel and explore fully, including resale. You can always go back.

I've done the math on other threads where I compare a not-just-released cruise's pricing on points (based on current annual value, direct buy-in present day+dues, so those nasty expensive Poly or AUL points) vs. renting those points and booking via Dreams Unlimited or other agencies who offer on-board credits or cash back cards etc. The points bookings always lose.

I've done the math a bunch of times over the years and in general I'd agree but I think it depends in part on where you are. For buying to use for cruises it has never made sense in any scenario. For one who already owns, it rarely does, I've seen a couple of exceptions. The first year of AK was $10 a point, close to the going rate at the time. I've seen one person report a return of $18 pp on a transatlantic but I was doubtful. And I think there are use or lose situations or someone who just has extra points. IMO the biggest negative isn't the cost/value but rather the other limitations that are applicable. I'd suggest no one ever buy for this purpose but if one owns and has the option, just look at the variables to see where it falls. IMO, if it breaks even on renting out through a company after taxes, do that and reserve privately due to the other limitations.

Why the recommendation to cancel? We didn't purchase for the cruise benefits. I just asked a simple question.
Likely because you mentioned you're in recision period, and the statement you made about what you were told by your DVC guide is, basically, wrong. So to us, that's a huge red flag that there may very well be other things you were told that were dodgy.

Right now, DVC can buy the AP Gold at the same pricing offered FL residents. This is not how the benefit is defined, however, nor is "being able to get a discount on an AP" a permanent thing. Ticket discounts come and go, as they're negotiated annually with Disney itself. DVC is a different business division.

There are a few guides who, honestly, spout half-truths and misdirections to get the sale. We're concerned you got one of them. Once 10 days pass, there is no get out of jail free card.

My recommendation to consider canceling was because you can now and can't later. It's likely you need to know more before you know if a retail purchase is a good choice for you, it isn't for most people and almost never is for someone who's new to the system.

what dvc resort did you buy? Sounds like you bought direct. You do know about resale , right?

We bought direct (Poly resort). I've looked at resale and considered, but it appears you lose some benefits if you buy resale. We bought the minimum points direct and plan to add on through resale long-term.

The benefits you lose aren't much use to people with small contracts or who aren't going multiple times per year.

And NONE of them you lose by buying resale plus 25 retail points have true value.
