My daughter's sweet 16 party is this summer -- We're throwing a Blacklight dance party for her at our local community center. Blew most of my budget on the dj, so trying to keep it the decorations/accessories cheap. ;)

Has anyone ever melted old records in the oven, into bowls? Since the dance is under the blacklight, I'm hoping to find some neon-colored old LPs at an used record store. I remember one of my mom's Elvis records came in bright neon blue so I'm hoping to score.

My question is....is this safe? If I do it say, next month, will it still put harmful fumes out in August? I was thinking of just putting highlighter/blacklight reactive toys in them, but would it be safe to put chips in, too?? :confused3

Also, anyone else ever done a party like this? I have highlighters, blacklight reactive toys, a big white sheet for her friends to write on and tons of blacklights. Oh yeah, and all those necklaces and bracelets that light up. Do I need anything else? I want this to be the coolest party ever! :woohoo:

I've done it and while I don't know about putting off fumes or anything what I did was put a couple of clear coats over the label (both sides) so that it was washable. You could also put in some wax paper or parchment paper as a liner before adding the chips/snacks .

Not sure if you already know how to do it but here are a couple of sites "just in case"

I think this is the instructions I used when I made some

Not a chemist or anything, but personally I wouldn't worry too much. Probably once they are cooled they wouldn't give off anything "toxic" any more than they would have originally... and we all lived with boxes of these albums around the house growing up, right??

If you are really concerned, find some sort of liner you could use in the bowl if you are going to use them for food.

Good luck with the party. I LOVE planning fun themed birthday parties. My DD will turn 16 next year.... I can't wait to see what kind of ideas she comes up with for her party!! ...............P

Thanks for the replies...and the link! ;)
Can't wait to see how they turn out!
