got a letter in mail today, Megan has been invited to join their England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales group next summer with other 5th and 6th graders from WA state.

quite the honor, but its for 20 days and no parents that I can tell from their website.

I can't imagine sending to her Europe for that long, or anywhere for that matter at 12 years old....maybe when in high school!

has anyone else's kid done this before?

We had one of the granddaughter's in the church go 2 summers ago to one for central Europe but she was going into her senior year of high school. I believe they were closely chaperoned during the trip but I never really asked.

At ten and eleven years old, I agree, that is a long time.

I do know a girl in town who did it however I think she was 13 or 14. She had a wonderful time, the group was fully chapereoned.

My daughter was first invited in the 4th grade and has been invited three years. We did attend a meeting and you are correct, you are not allowed to attend. I thought they would let parents attend for a fee, but they do not. If I remember correctly, the cost for her to attend was around $2000.

Both my girls have been invited (more than once). They didn't go--too long away from home alone AND too spendy!!!

Maybe she'll get asked again when in high school!

just too far away, I'm going to have issues with her being gone this weekend to Camp Erin (grief camp) and its only a hour away!

20 days is a long time at that age - Kicky did a week at scout camp, and elder DS has done 10 days but three weeks! (and yes, its a LOT of money) - I would have issues with that if it was the other way. And I think Kicky would too!

If DS(17) gets his first choice at college he'll be a semester in the US in his second year - but the college sort out everything (including accomodation and health insurance) and he'll be 20 by that point.

Wow Lisa, what and honor for Megan. But I agree with everyone else, 20 days is a long time to be away from home at that age. I would be a nervous wreck!

happy to hear everyone would be as nervous as I would be...just too far for too long! guess I'm not a total nervous nellie by myself!

I'm 13 and just recently got invited with P&PA to go to Australia with other 8th graders. My parents said no, of course. They don't feel comfortable with sending their daughter away with strangers...halfway across the world!!!

Eldest got one this summer too. There was no way I was letting him go that far away for that long for that much money.

It might have swayed me if they actually did something different from a normal tour, but they don't. If perhaps they met students or families from those countries, more like a mini foreign exchange with site seeing thrown in program, I would have been more interested.

But right now, there is no way I am letting a child of mine go out of the country without me or family close by.

Lisa I'm with everyone else NO WAY! Especially out of the country

Morgan got an invite yesterday. She wants to go. I laughed and laughed...She cried for 3 days of a 5 day stint at camp.

yay for Morgan.....what did she say to your laughing? I'd let Megan go in a heart beat if I could go too!

My sister wants me to find out if I can go as a chaperone.

Morgan said "I always wanted to see Paris, I'd be fine." She's a funny girl. "Always wanted to see Paris..." she's all of 11. :lmao:

I already looked into the chaparone thing too....no go!

too funny, that's Megan dream too! told her we will go to Europe when she graduated from high school...thinking of doing the Adventures by Disney tours!!
