I looked on the boards for this info but the last post I saw that had actual dollar amounts was 5 years ago so please forgive me if this has been asked recently.

I am trying to decide on which insurance to get and when. My major concern is medical needs on-board. While we are all healthy I do tend to get sinus infections a good bit in the winter time (our cruise is on-board the Magic Feb 2016) and I have a toddler so ear infections are always a concern. So my question is how much does a standard visit cost? Doctor evaluation and a course of antibiotics with maybe a steroid shot? Nothing major like labs or IV fluids.

I can tell you that on another cruise line two years ago,I had an abessessed tooth. It was a quick look to confirm and antibiotics and it was between $300 and $400.

Good question. I researched this as well as DS has ketotic hypoglycemia and we've avoided cruises for awhile due to the chance of illness. I hadn't thought if looking at price....

There are just some insurances that have deductibles and some are secondary. If it is a very high cost I don't want to have to submit it to my regular health insurance, wait for a denial of claim and then submit it to the travel insurance. Also if its only going to cost $50 to go to the clinic the $50 deductible seems worthless.

I had to visit the clinic during an Aug 2014 cruise after I ruptured my eardrum on an excursion.. I was billed $177.63, including antibiotic ear drops and pain meds. The charges were billed to our onboard account, and paid at the end of the cruise with everything else. Once home, I was able to submit the receipts to our medical insurance and I was reimbursed all but my standard co-pay.

On a side note- the medical unit is open certain hours. If they see you after hours, the charge is more. I went down a little before they reopened for late afternoon hours and they explained the difference. I was able to just sit and fill out paperwork, and was ready to be seen once they opened. And the employees were super nice (not Disney cast members, it's a contracted service).

Does that help?

I had to go to medical services during my cruise, May 2014. I was charged $140.00. I declined treatment because the Doctor wanted to prescribe antibiotics for my knee that was swollen from being banged into a table and chair. I actually went because my head was still sore from that same incident. He wasn't concerned about that because there was just a bump and no cut. I got the charge taken off because it wasn't my fault. The charge was just an evaluation. I don't know how much the treatment would have cost.

DD22 visited the clinic on the Fantasy for an infection. We were charged $138 which included the prescribed medication.

I went for an evaluation and medication. The charge was somewhere between $200 and $300. The majority of the charge was for the visit/evaluation. The medication was two or three different kinds but only a small amout to get me back on land where I could purchase on my own. They offered to give me more than that and I Should have said yes.

I slipped on the deck coming off the Aqua Dunk almost 2 weeks ago on the Magic and sprained my thumb. (That deck is shockingly not slip-proof like the pool deck, but whatever) I was at the front desk applying gift cards to my account later that day so I thought I'd ask about being seen. The CM said that it's $140 JUST to be seen, plus the cost of whatever I may need. He also said that since they do not have the equipment to xray, it was better worth it to wait until I was home.

This is where I would complain, you slipped because of their negligence. That visit should have been free to evaluate!

Sept 2014 on the Magic, $140 for the Dr. to see DH and dx sinus infection. $81 for oral antibiotics and oral steroid. Our trip insurance had a $50 deductible. We got a check for $171.

Disneyteachers, I would be interested to hear the info that you have found. My daughter also has Ketotic Hypoglycemia. We didn't take her on our cruise last year, because I was too nervous to take her. We are planning on taking her for our April 2016 cruise. I am not sure if I should get a prescription for her IV fluid. She would need D10, and I am not sure how to find out if they have that on board. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

I would contact DCL directly and ask. If you need to contact the Dr. contractor, they could probably give you that information.

Holy cow, another ketotic hypoglycemic...I don't know anybody who has even heard of it! :). My DS6 (will be 7) would probably need glucose and iv fluids, but knock on wood he hasn't had any significant episodes in almost a year (a few months ago he was in trouble for breaking a laptop screen and I found him under a table, white, and shaking uncontrollably. I had to give him snacks before I could speak with him
About a consequence. That is the first time we've seen stress impact him. We were nervous about kindergarten, but he gets a few extra snacks throughout the day and seems to have lucked out when it comes to getting sick. My biggest concern on a cruise is norovirus. If he were home, he'd be admitted ASAP. I do think it could be managed on board based on what I've read. I'll bring zofran (I always travel with it for him) with us for the trip too. We are also going on an Alaskan cruise which makes me feel a little bit better about it and my pediatrician is someone I can text or call with questions and our endocrinology office is awesome as well!

And I have trip insurance... :)

My DD (was 7 then) is hypoglycemic. Not ketotic. But if she goes more than 3 hours between meals, she gets very shaky, irritable, headaches, nauseous, etc. so basically she has to eat every 2.5 hours. When she hits a growth spurt, we have to wake her during the night to have her eat something so her sugars don't drop too low.
The biggest issue we had on the cruise was TOO MUCH food lol. But her problem is she doesn't eat full meals, she grazes. She seemed to do great on the cruise. We grabbed snacks like apples and bananas from Cabana's and the concierge lounge and kept them in our bags at all times. i would see if your doctors can give you some of the glucose tubes and just keep several on hand. Take the glucose test kits with you and monitor more frequently than you do at home. With even the slightest drop, have a snack ready. Keep the glucose tubes handy at all times. Medically speaking, the doctors should have everything on the ship they need for just about any medical emergency. That includes insulin and D5W and any other diabetic supplies.

Good advice, DS is a grazer and a picky eater and I'll bring some snacks that are the current winners. Unfortunately, his staple is yogurt, which is probably harder to locate than, say, pizza! :) I always bring his test kit and I have glucose tablets too. He is one awfully behaved kid when he's low...not interested in that on the cruise.

I also tend to get sinus infections but year round. Could you ask your doctor for a just in case antibiotic? I plan asking my doctor for one.

She might do that. not sure. I am definitely planning on seeing her to get some zofran or phenergan to combat seasickness. I will have to ask her about that too.

I had never heard of anyone having Ketotic Hypoglycemia before either. My daughter was 9 months when we had the first episode. She will be 3 in Aug. I do have Zofran, so I will bring that with me. We are only going on a 4 night. I just worry about a stomach virus. So far we have to go to the hospital about twice a year. We will buy trip insurance. We bought it for our Disney World trip this past April, and ended up needing it for our son. Best money I ever spent!
