is the sea sickness medication outside of the med office-is it dramamine or meclazine?

I know dramamine is over the counter. I have to buy that for DS who gets car sick. Not sure about the other one though.

Dramamine is Dimenhydrinate, and Bonine is Meclizine.

My pharmacist explained that the Bonine is more effective generally, and causes a lot less drowsiness than Dramamine.

There is a Dramamine II available which is Meclizine - and although I haven't seen it, I assume it is the "less drowsy" version being marketed that I have heard about.

If my memory serves me correctly, meclizine is what is available outside the ship's MD's office.

I have taken Dramamine several times, only to sleep through the entire event. I took Bonine with me on my DCL cruise, and was very happy with the results!

again, awsome...I can get bonnine for the park during my land portion and I'll have what ever I need outside the med office door...works for me...

It's worth bringing some Bonine on board with you. Don't count on the infirmiry always having it available. I've heard from a few people that the supply does sometimes run out. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it....

The best advice I've read, and then done myself, was to start taking the Bonine (meclazine) the day BEFORE your cruise, and then keep taking one each morning with breakfast, continuing each day of your cruise. This way the level of medication in your bloodstream remains constant and will better ward off any nausea before it can hit you. Ours is a prescription from our doctor, although I'm assuming it's the same strength as the OTC stuff, and our doctor told us that if we did begin to get seasick during the cruise, it was safe to take up to 3 tablets per day. Fortunately we didn't need to do that. Would we have gotten seasick or dizzy had we not taken the meclazine each day of the cruise? I don't know, but it definitely was not worth finding out :teeth: We took our pill each morning with breakfast and we felt GREAT during the entire cruise, even when we hit rough seas in the Atlantic Ocean on the at-sea days on the return trip.

I would suggest bringing it with you. We looked for some at the infirmary and they were all out luckily we found some more in our luggage. Dramamine is like Benadryl and Dramamine II is Meclizine just in a really expensive form. We can go to our local Walmart or Target and get 100 meclizine for 8.00 where buying bonine or dramamine 2 you usually get 8-12 tablets for 4-6 dollars. I also would highly recommend that if you are going to take any kind of medication you try it out BEFORE you leave your house to see what if any kind of reaction you might have to the medication. I had a terrible reaction to the patch and spent 3 days in my cabin sick as a dog and had I tried it out at home I wouldnt have wasted 3 days of my trip. It's also alot easier to see your own doctor if you do have a reaction than it is to go to the ships infirmary since you have to usually pay it in full on your KTTW card and THEN get reimbursed for your insurance. We take the bottle of Meclizine with us and start it 2 days before we leave for our trip even if that includes a trip to WDW. Helps with the motion of rides. Then we take one every single morning with a glass of water in our cabin when we wake up and we have yet to struggle with sea sickness. If you take it at the same time every day it does keep your level constant and thus makes it less likely you will suffer later on. Also with Dramamine they suggest NO alcohol (if that is a big deal for you) where with Meclizine our pharmacist told us alcohol is fine but it can increase the drowsiness a little bit. We tried that out at home as well...a few drinks with the Meclizine just to make sure.
