Med Cruise Question - Exchanging/Converting Money On-Board (U.S. $ to Euros)

My local bank charges a $1 fee for foreign (not their own) ATMs. I try to get as much cash as my daily limit allows ($500 US/day) to minimize trips to the ATM as well as fees.

About chip and pin - that should be a problem only if you use a credit card at an unattended machine. I had no problem using mine in Europe where the card was swiped and I signed.

Our bank charges are similar. We needed about 1600 euro in cash for our private driver guides plus a bit more for pocket money during our recent Med cruise. We used the ATM down the street from our hotel each day of our 4 day pre-cruise stay in Barcelona. Since the ATM limits you to 300 Euro per transaction, we would do two transactions and take out 600 Euro per day, this also kept us right below our daily limit which we had the bank raise to $1K per day for the duration of our trip. It worked out great. The ATMs we used had an English option and you can find them on almost every corner.

We also had no problem using our Credit card. Used it for most large meals, Pisa tickets, Colleseum tickets and shopping.
