Can you just put them in the crockpot or do you have to bake them first?

I would bake them- there might be too much moisture in the crockpot and they might not hold together.

If your cooking them in sauce it may get greasy. I always bake or fry them first.

So I won't kill myself from food poisoning? Good to know. I never made homemade meatballs before, this is my first time. I always buy frozen pre-cooked ones.

Were they store bought frozen or homemade frozen? The store bought ones are already cooked so they'll be fine. Homemade ones will break apart when you take them out plus they'll be lacking a bit in flavor without the browning.
