Measles at Disneyland (combined threads)

Sadly, I think we are going to cancel our Dapper Day / birthday trip. :-( Our youngest will be 11 weeks during the trip, far too young to be vaccinated, and the risk is just too high.

I'm hopeful Alaska Airlines will be merciful and waive change fees for us to go in the fall (or next February), but I'm not counting on it. More likely, we're out 5 change fees (which is, sadly, most of the fares!).

If we were all vaccinated, I think we'd go and not worry too terribly about it. I hope everyone has a great DD and stays healthy. I'll be there in spirit anyway.

You almost certainly haven't had the second dose, because the second dose was only introduced in 1989. But you are most likely immune anyway, as the majority are after one dose. The second dose is to catch the minority who don't develop immunity after a first dose.

The 2nd dose was mandated in my state in the early 90s..I'm 35 and I had the 2nd dose in Jr. High. At that time it was "required" for anyone entering 6th grade or higher. So the pp may have had it as a teen if it was mandated in their state..

I think the number is slightly higher than that, but I would call your doctor and ask if it's worthwhile getting the second booster a bit earlier than 18 months. The shots are timed to maximize the body's immune response (and therefor the effectiveness), but sometimes in the case of an outbreak it's better to forgo absolute maximum effectiveness in order to get more immediate protection.

Edited to add: I'm pretty positive I had both doses as I'm 34, however I had a titers last year before we went because there was an outbreak in SoCal and I had no immunities left so I had to get a booster. That is broken up in two shots over a week period so if you're gonna do it, do it asap.

Interesting because on the CDC's website even it says the second dose just needs to be at least 4 weeks after the first one. Weird that your Dr would say that. My son is also 3. I'm not sure if he has had his second dose or not, but I would doubt it just because it seems to be given before school.
I am interested to know if I still have immunities to it. I might see what DH thinks about getting tested.
I would venture to guess that how ever many were vaccinated and still got it, hadn't had a booster. So that maybe the answer and the takeaway from this is the measles vaccination isn't a lifelong vaccination for the majority of people. So it is something to consider!

Sad but you are definitely better safe than sorry with one that young. And changing the date you'll get to see all the updated stuff! Don't know if this will help but a doctors note about the baby may help with a chance at getting a fee or two waived.

My son won't start school until he's almost 6 anyway because of where his birthday falls. I think if a parent requests the booster early they should be allowed it. We're paying for it so I don't know what the problem is.

It isn't that simple. Southern California is having an outbreak. And DL is a popular destination in Southern California. Cases could pop up anywhere.

That said, since our family is fully immunized, I would be comfortable going right now. I really feel for those with little ones too young to vaccinate yet.

Saw on the news this morning on FOXTEL, which show News from America, the story stated 70 odd cases so far, of those 17 DID NOT visit disneyland in the past few months.

How they initially thought the time frame for the spread of measles, was of a few days in december, they have now stated up to mid January, as cast members and other visitors are contracting measles well into January.

Apparently they have not been able to locate the person who had measles to start with, to see where else they may have gone.

We just cancelled. My daughter and I were taking my 7 month old grandson. Simply not worth the risk. Incredibly, Orbitz refunded park ticket purchased just yesterday before we saw news that the number of outbreaks have risen and there is now a health advisory. We booked Alaska too....we'll see what happens there. Disneyland Express was nice on the phone but my request for a refund needed to be forwarded, if not, those transfers are good for a year.

I have a Mommy and Son trip starting on Tuesday of next week. What scares me is my son is 6 months old. I know this outbreak didn't just happen and hope what ever this is has gone already. However I am still not sure if we should go now.

Do NOT go. I am not an alarmist kind of person, but if the experts are publicly saying to stay away from DL (if unvaccinated), you should really work on postponing this trip until this summer, or until your son has received his first MMR.

Your infant will have some immunity from breast milk, but not 100%. Measles is very contageous, as it is airborne, it 'floats in the air.'

I was about to post that it's a bit misleading that they are focusing all this on DL. You could contract this anywhere the public goes, including the airport. or even the base. It would be quite foolish for anyone to think DL is the only place to contact it. I think it's been disingenuous for the media to focus so much on DL. Since they have no idea who patient zero is I am not sure that it's possible to say without a doubt that all cases were contracted there. It could well be a coincidence that all who have it went there and some probably did contact it there but it's equally as possible that the first cases contracted it elsewhere in the area. I don't even think the health officials in the area are on the same page when it comes to warnings about where to avoid, or where not to avoid.

I am in complete agreement with you. The media is focusing on DL as it grabs peoples attention.

That wasn't really my point. I am not doubting that you are at risk at DL. My doubt is that it is only in DL. Obviously those who have the disease now went somewhere else in the area in addition to DL. There isn't something "non"magical at DL that is causing it to spread there and there alone. It will spread from other places those people went too, like an airport or the mall or the grocery store. So the point is if you are wanting to avoid it I don't think you should go to S. CA at all. Going and avoiding DL only isn't necessarily going to mean you are safe.
