Meals in your villa?

Is there a Publix near AKL? Is that comparable to a Wal-Mart (would they have diapers, etc)?

There is a Publix near AKL. Publix is like Schnuck's. When you leave the resort grounds, go to Sherberth (sp) road and turn right. Go to highway 192 and turn right. There is a newer Publix down a bit on the right. There is also a Super Target almost across the street from the entrance to Publix. Have fun.

Thanks again for all the help! I am making lists now. :thumbsup2

Publix is a grocery store, but a big one.

The one near-ish AKL is across the street from a Super Target, FYI. Which has a great Disney souvenir section. :) Actually, most of the stores in the area have Disney souvenirs...that's a good thing if you want to buy souvenirs there, but a bad thing if you have a child who will want want want and will delay your food shopping by looking at everything there. :) (or if you have a husband who will do that, LOL)

I used Garden Grocer last trip because they do deliver from Whole Foods. Actually, I think I ordered "comparable" so I don't know where it came from. But we got stuff for breakfast along the lines of eggs and bacon. With a big breakfast, we didn't eat much at lunch and had ADRs for dinner.

One of my kids favorites is breakfast for dinner. Easy and there is something for everybody.

After watching the advertisement for DVC in which the actress/hostess bakes cookies in the villa, I now must do that everytime we go!

I also like to purchase the Bertolli frozen packages of pasta and serve that with a salad. Another great thing to pack in your suitcase is the Rick Bayless Frontera fajita, taco and enchilada sauces. The sauces come in a package and taste fresh and are absolutely delicious. In Aulani, I cooked shrimp and then added the salsa verde over it and served it with rice. Easy!

This map is not to scale, but it will give you an idea of the Public and Super Target from Kidani. When you leave Kidani or Jambo, you will turn right on Sherberth Road, then turn right on 192, it's a couple of miles before you get to Publix and the Super Target. Publix will be on your right, Super Target across the street on your left.

There are only two of us so we face some challenges in shopping that anyone cooking for two at home might. We can't do the large roasts or other things like tacos (the shells come 8-12 to a package, so it's a waste unless we eat tacos all week). My favorite feature of the one bedroom kitchens is the "delay bake" setting on the ovens of the newer resorts.

I'll make meatloaf with a package of mashed potatoes and some green beans or other veggie. At the VGC I usually prepare meals at home and bring them, but in Florida I would make it the night before and then put it in the oven midday and then set the oven to turn on around a half an hour before we got back to the room. The sides only take about 10 mins to cook, so it's really easy!

Another favorite in the room is Balsamic chicken, just season with salt, pepper and garlic powder, drizzle with oil and balsamic vinegar and bake. Any quick sides will work.

We like kielbasa & sauerkraut. I serve Velveeta shells and cheese with this, but potato salad, or other deli salads would go great.

I have a szechwan chicken that is an easy stir fry recipe that I've been making at "efficiency" style hotels long before we bought DVC.

We always do breakfast in the room, mostly yogurt, bagels and cream cheese or toast, but at least once in each trip (usually twice) I like to make a real bacon & eggs or French Toast breakfast.

We can usually pull lunch together from leftovers from ADRs, but we also buy a pack of lunchmeat and sliced cheese as well as a bag of chips and some whole fruits.

The idea of a pill container for spices is brilliant! I have a "spice box" which I put together from a little organizer from the hardware store. I picked up some jewelry sized baggies (think holds one ring) at the crafts store and I fill the little baggies with my most common spices. The organizer has little spacers so I can make varying sizes of compartments for packets of soy sauce, other condiments from various locations I find them. I'm just waiting for the day that the TSA goes through my luggage and finds the spices..."and you want us to believe that this is REALLY cornstarch?". :rotfl2:

At HHI, I cook a big breakfast every morning, but at WDW, we tend to get to the parks early - so it's just a grab and go breakfast for us. We have sandwich, chips, etc... for lunch most days and generally eat supper in a park or resort. When we've taken extended family with us - we'll fix roasts or hams, lasagna and meals that a large group can enjoy.

I do usually purchase the break apart cookies in the refrigerator section of Publix and bake a dozen cookies every night before bedtime. That has become a tradition that my youngest son always reminds me to keep up.

We drive to WDW and this year, I had left over lunch meat, bread, cheese, etc... I made sandwiches before we left and put in the cooler in ziplock bags. We stopped at a rest area and ate on the way home and saved time and money! Don't know why I never thought of that before!

We usually make nearly identical meals to what we make at home. Since AKL is very close to several grocery stores, we do tend to cook there a bit more than we do when we are at other resorts. We buy some of our things at the super Target, and some at Publix. LOVE the bakery at Publix!:thumbsup2

I am using my phone right now, but SamSam posted a map on page two. I saved it for when we drive down. :)
