So, which places on site and off site require reservations to eat at? I feel I'm behind on this front, we are going to be there at the start of April.

Also - what places are "not to be missed?"

Off site, if you're going to any of the touristy waikiki restaurants (like say Dukes) you'll want a reservation. You don't necessarily need them, but you'd wait a long time. Bar area no reservation needed. Most waikiki restaurants take reservations .

On site both Ama Ama and the buffet take reservations. Ama Ama at sunset is a very popular reservation and books up fast.

We found that getting into Makahiki for a dinner buffet during "Menehune Mischief" without a reservation was quite difficult. We didn't make a reservation beforehand, and all the dates and times during our stay were booked. Luckily, Dining was able to fit us in after I called persistently. The food is the same as the regular buffet (but the price is $2-3 more per person), but you get the added entertainment of Uncle singing and telling stories, and Stitch and Goofy showing up to cause mischief, lead kids around the dining room, and take pictures with all the guests.

The regular Makahiki buffet dinner is available in this location beginning at 6:30 PM, 7 nights a week.

Please note: this dining event will not be offered on New Year's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We had breakfast reservations at Ama Ama and Makahiki, and dinner reservations at Makahiki. There seemed to be room at breakfast at Ama Ama so not sure if an ADR was necessary. The character breakfast at Makahiki most definitely needed a reservation. And the non-character dinner at Makahiki was half empty as well. All that said, we did go during a slow time of year. I would just try to make reservations to be safe.

Across the street, you don't need a reservation for Monkeypod but it may help cut down on the wait. Reservations can be made through Open Table. I made one minutes before we left our room to walk over there. Standby folks were quoted a 45 minute wait time. We were seated immediately since we had a reservation!

We did our reservations for the onsite restaurants for dinner and the character breakfast 6 months out when we went last June. We were a group of 10 and even with reservations waited at times. Some evenings the restaurants had plenty of room, other nights, they were turning people without reservations away...better safe than sorry, I'd make some just to have them. Unlike the parks, you aren't charged if you don't show, they just ask that you let them know if you won't be using the reservation so they don't hold your table.
