Meal Plan Before Checking into Hotel?

I'm in the process of planning a short trip next summer and am considering doing the dining plan for the first time (I did the math and it seems like a smart, convenient choice.) We will be driving up early in the morning the first morning of our stay and heading straight to a park. Do I need to check in at the hotel first, to activate the plan, or can I use my mealplan if the park is the first place I go?
