We have done ME and rented a car from Alamo on past trips. I'm undecided for our August 2010 trip. While we loved ME, I'm not sure if having a car would be easier. Our group consists of 3 adults and 2 children (6 and 2). We're doing a split stay at the Poly and GF, so getting to the MK and Epcot will be a breeze. Not so sure about the buses to and from DHS, AK, and DTD. What would you do?

We actually do both. :)

We arrive at MCO, and take DME to our resort.

We arrange our rental with either Alamo or National, and pick it up the following day at the CCC. We then have a car at our disposal for most of the trip. We will return it the day before we're due to leave, and take DME back to the airport.

In your shoes, we'd use the monorail to get to MK and EPCOT and use the car to get around to the other parks.

That's a great idea. I really like not having to stop in baggage claim to get my luggage, so DME and then a rental car might be a good option.
