Has anyone had any experience using ME with oversize luggage?

It's an incredible pain to get a rental car big enough to haul around a bike box and I've had 2 good experiences so far with ME so I would really rather use them if they'll haul the bike box to VWL for me and then take it back to the airport. I've shipped a bike to a race site before and frankly I would be money ahead just paying the $50/way to fly it with me when I do the FL Half Ironman in May. I also wouldn't have to worry about the window of time before and after the race when the bike was in transit and therefore not available to me to train/race on. BTW- it probably weighs less than golf clubs and is definitely under 50 lbs. We(cyclists) get nailed for oversize charges due to the size and not the weight of the box.

I wonder how the insurance works though? At least when I FedEx it, I can pay to put adequate replacement cost insurance on it. Would homeowner's insurance cover it? I plan on flying non-stop to and from MHT though so maybe I would actually collect my luggage before checking in with ME to make sure it made it to Orlando, then I could take it on the bus to the resort with us.

TIA

I would imagine if the airlines accept the box that DME would also. I am not aware of any insurance you could use to cover your bike on the airlines.

The only problem I can think of is that DME is looking for luggage on the carousel rather than the oversized office. It could be overlooked. My strongest advice to you is to claim it yourself and take it to the bus for loading.

I used to fly with my bike--they get pretty banged up in those bike boxes, be sure to take a few tools along for minor repairs. The airlines don't accept any responsibility for damage. Your home owners may or may not cover damage less the deductible, you'd have to talk to your agent or broker.
