ME and Luggage

Thank you for all your advice on how to pack a 12 to 24 hour survival carry on. :) But...

I DO NOT WANT TO PACK AND CARRY ON ALL THAT STUFF.

My question is has anyone been using the service lately, and if so, how long does it take for them to deliver your luggage to your room after the room is ready?

Never had DME take longer than the expected three-hours-after-check-in-provided-the-room-is-ready time frame in several trips.

If the airline loses your luggage for a day or two you may change your mind about packing in carry ons.

There was a recent post with a poll about just this - maybe that will help with your decision ?

I always use the luggage delivery feature and love it - however I am never in the room when the bags arrive so I can't answer your quesiton. We arrive, check in, store our carryons with bell services and hit a park. When we return our luggage has always been waiting in the room.

IIRC the literature says 3 hours after you check in so I would plan on at least that.

Finally - your contact solution and medicine are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule so you are free to carry that on if you wish.

but I love packing my carry on!! I am sitting on my hands right now because its still too early to pack (although my suitcase is in the dining room!!!) Packing means the trip is here!

I have a bag in my luggage closet that is stuffed to bursting with travel sized stuff! My family teases me about it all the time. Anything that comes near me in a sample sized package immediately goes in the bag, the little tube of toothpaste & toothbrush you get after a teeth cleaning (I take my old toothbrush to WDW and throw it way at the end of vaca & come home to a new brush!), shampoo/conditioner/laundry detergent samples that come in the mail or the Sunday papers, got a bunch of foundation sample containers from the cosmetics dept at Macys - each holds about 5 days worth of foundation - I have a dozen filled & just grab 2 for my trip. I think the only thing I've ever actually bought for the bag is a small pump hairspray & now I fill it from my large bottle at home when it gets empty. Really my 3-1-1 bag stays packed. When its time to use it, I replenish a few things from my stash bag & throw it in, pjs & a clean shirt, my little makeup bag, crossword puzzles for the ride & off I go!

Alrighty then. DME literature tells us to expect our bags in our room up to 3 hrs after resort checkin..note, I said 'resort' checkin, not airport arrival and checkiin at DME.

I understand not wanting to pack a ton of 'stuff' in a carryon. BUT...here's my story, sad but true.
I always packed a carryon bag with stuff I needed...jammies, toothbrush/paste, deod., fresh undies and any meds I needed. You can just never tell what may happen when traveling by air. Well...a few years ago, we were returning from a wonderful trip to the Ft Lauderdale area to visit my dad. We flew SW home on NYE's day...booked a flight that would get us home in plenty of time for the night's festivities. Well....as we approached the NE area, we start circling. We've flown enough to know when something's just not right. Then, they made the announcement that we were heading to Philly!!! There was some issue with the runways at TFGreen, it had snowed and a plow had hit some piece of electronics that was needed for landings. As we landed at Philly, we were told we now had two choices...
A. get off and spend the night in Philly and fly out the next morning, but with no checked bags. They weren't being taken off the plane!!
or..
B. stay with the plane (and your luggage) and return to FtL and spend the night, with your bags given to you, and fly out the next morning.

Since I had stupidly not correctly packed our carryons, I had no clean clothes, no toiletries, no jammies. But, I had our Christmas gifts from Dad!!!!
So, we had find toiletries at the hotel that we finally found. Had to sleep in my tee shirt that I was wearing, and wear it again the next day to fly home in.
All in all?? Learned my lesson..pack my carryon bags correctly, even when flying home.

Your checked bags can be misdirected, or lost. You could be diverted someplace else as we were. You just never know. Most of the time, your flights will go smoothly. But, I have to tell you...all it took was that one time for me to learn my lesson!!!

You sound just like me. I have an entire crate (almost like an Owners Locker) in my bedroom that is full of my 'travel stuff'...it is basically everything and anything I might ever need to pack for WDW, or other places. Tons of trial sizes...love the site Minimus!!!

Okay you guys. I will take your advice into consideration and stop being stubborn. ;)

When we travel to the westcoast or Europe, it's a different story, but I've become accustomed to hopping on my JB direct with just my wallet, papers, sweater, sunglasses, a magazine and my ziplock with lipstick. There is a certain free feeling to it now that I don't have kids in diapers. lol. If flying wasn't such a military procedure these days, I'd throw everything in a carry on and wouldn't even check a bag. With so many airlines charging to check luggage, it's no wonder that security gets so backed up and that it's often tough to find an overhead bin on the plane. But my rant is over. It is what it is.

I used to be the person who started buying stuff and packing weeks ahead but with all the traveling we do and a full time job, I've become a last minute packer. This trip I've sworn I'm not going to overpack (which I always do) and use the washer and dryer. :)

You do what works for you. I love flying 'hands free' so to speak. But, I've never minded having my Vera Bradley smallish backpack with me...works quite nicely and fits a goodly amount of 'stuff' that I need.
Yes, sometimes we can get downright militant here...but we hate to hear about people having bad experiences. So, we put the info out there...then each person can do what they want to do with it. Travel as you see fit. Everyone has to make their own choices.

While it's possible nobody reading this thread so far has used DME recently, I can guarantee you that (a) thousands of people have; (b) millions and millions of people have used it since its inception over six years ago - well over ten million, actually; (c) the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of users have been completely satisfied with the service.

The typical and advertised length of time it takes to get your checked luggage 'automagically' to your room is three hours after you check in at your resort and your room is ready. If you check in at 9 AM and your room is ready at 4, your luggage will be in your room by 7 - actually a lot earlier, unless the airline misdirected it. If you check at that same time and your room is ready, you should have your luggage by noon.

But due to the airlines' propensity to misdirect luggage - averaging two million to 2.1 million bags per year - the prepared airline passenger wants to pack a carry-on with whatever will be needed for the first 24 hours at the destination: night clothes, change of clothes, toiletries, medications, swimwear...also electronics, jewelry - anything expensive or irreplaceable or valuable, aka that wouldn't be replaced by the airline if the checked luggage were lost permanently.

As for not wanting to seek out or pay for travel sizes... okay, first check the size on normal products. Most full-size antiperspirant is under 3.4 ounces. Look for special packaging. The shampoo and conditioner I use each came with a 3.4 ounce bottle of the other product. Yes, I do have to refill them in occasion, but I get to bring the products that work on my hair.

Now, all that - the clothes, the pjs, the 3-1-1 bag, electronics, etc., minus the swimsuit - fit in my personal item and a rollaboard that fits standing on its nine inch side in one of Jet Blue's overhead bins.

I totally understand where you are coming from with this....would be so nice just to waltz through security, on and off the plane, off to WDW!

But...whether you use DME or not, as others pointed out, there is still a chance of a checked bag being misdirected or delayed (or sometimes lost, but they do usually find them eventually). I travel for work and pleasure totalling about 28+ weeks/year. I will not get on a plane without toothbrush/paste, basic makeup needs, all needed medications--which would include contact lens solution if I still wore contacts (yay, Lasik!), and at least a change of socks and underwear. (and glasses, keys, wallet, etc) I have had bags delayed (usually gotten to me within a day or so) at least once or twice a year. It just happens. Less chance if you are on a non-stop flight.

I've used DME over a dozen times (probably more like 20), and have not experienced significant delays in my bag getting to me, but like other posters, I am usually off to dinner, or a park, and the bag is delivered while I am gone. Whatever I need FOR THAT DAY will come with me on the plane.

And, I am one who hates MCO baggage claim....have also had a wait of 45+ minutes for bags to hit the carousel. I'd generally already be cruising down the road in the bus by then. (My avg time to the resort is about spot on the 'reported' avg of 70 minutes...from off the plane to resort checkin line.)

Adding to say: I see you are on a direct (non stop, I assume) flight. And you arrive fairly early in the day. So why not just bring the basics and wait for ME? Bring your swimsuit, a travel size sunscreen, meds, (I'd still carry on contact supplies), and a change of undies and let ME do the heavy lifting. :)

I asked before but maybe no one knows....what are the odds of us getting our bags before we go to bed if our flight gets in at 7:00pm?

Will they wake us up at midnight to deliver them if they come in late?

I tried to answer this earlier... IMO, it depends on when your bed time is. If your flight gets in at 7, you'll get checked in between 8-8:30p. Then you're looking at baggage delivery between 11-11:30p. I don't know if they hold the bags after a certain time or not (but I know flights arriving after 10pm can't use ME luggage transfer).

I would have enough in my carryon for that night and the next day, tell baggage services when I get to the hotel to hold the bags if it's going to be after midnight.

We would probably still be awake until midnight from the excitement of being at WDW, so having that late a delivery wouldn't really bother me.

Quick clarification to the highlighted section above. Passengers on flights arriving after 10:00 p.m. have to collect their own bags and can't use the DME luggage transfer service, but the DME bus service runs 24-7.

At the deluxe and moderate resorts, where bell services run 24 hours per day, they will deliver bags in the middle of the night after they arrive from DME unless you arrange to have them held (and put out your Do Not Disturb sign, just in case). It is my understanding that luggage services at the values stop at midnight and any bags arriving after that are held until morning.

Thanks! I will make sure to have stuff for that night and the next day in carry-on :thumbsup2

I would say that for those folks who don't travel a lot it is a good idea to use up those free samples, er, travel supplies at home little by little. I too have a bunch of that stuff, including shampoos I stole from hotels, and occasionally I find them many years old and stale (caked up, dried out, etc.) -- in one instance the bottle (of thin fluid) was empty; the contents had gradually evaporated as opposed to leaked.

Hasn't happened to me yet. I wouldn't imagine that someone who doesn't travel a lot is going to have a stash of travel size toiletries to begin with. But those of us who travel frequently find it useful to always have them on hand.

I had an interesting encounter yesterday with a new bartender at the local watering hole I frequent.

She said they planned the "trip of a lifetime" to Disney World last year and will NEVER be back. She kept commenting about the bus taking so long to get her luggage; it finally dawned on me, she was talking about ME.

She said that she was told by the TA that she would get her bags by 3 p.m. They checked in at 2:00 pm and their room is ready. She said she waited until 3:00 pm, no bags. She called the front desk and insisted her bags were supposed to be in her room by 3:00 pm. She told them why she needed their bags, and they said they would get back to her immediately. She said, "can you believe the nerve of these people, we FINALLY got our bags at 3:40 pm."

I was shocked; I commented that she actually received her bags in 1 hour, and 40 minutes; that is less than the standard time of 3 to 4 hours.

I told her she may have misunderstood the TA. The luggage delivery is three hours after check-in, not 3 p.m. She looked at me kinda dumbfounded; and I asked why so insistent on getting your luggage.

Because her ANTI-SEIZURE MEDICATION was in her checked bag. And on top of it, she insisted they get the entire family's bags, just to get her medication.

She said, to add insult to injury, they "seemed" to blow off the incident, only giving them one day of free fast passes for the entire family and they sent up a gift basket with ears for her two children for their inconvenience.

I was like, are you serious - what would you have done if the airline lost your luggage and it took 24 hours for it to get to you. I explained to her what really happened.

I said, most likely, since you were re-miss in placing something in a checked bag that you really should have had on you - they most likely called a CM from guest services immediately, who was delivering baggage to other rooms that had arrived around noon, to go downstairs and sort through an entire room of baggage waiting to be sorted.... then ran the bags up to your room, inconveniencing other people.

Then they dispatched someone down to the gift shop to get ears, and called someone to get the fast passes.

On top of it, I said I guarantee you that if your luggage had been lost by the airline, they would have been on the phone to find it, and if it was indeed lost, they would be locating it for you. If it was delayed, they have arranged for you to be transported to a local clinic where you could see a doctor to get more medication until they could have located your bag....

Boy, I was hot.......it amazes me the stupid things people do when they travel and then blame it on everyone else but themselves.

Believe me, she did seem somewhat embarassed about it, but decided ultimately that Disney was just not for them..... oh well.

As already stated...luggage can be expected, in the room, up to 3 hrs after resort checkin. As you said, take that properly packed carryon bag with you. If, for some reason you don't want to be woken up when the bags do arrive, just let Bell Services or Luggage Asst (whichever your resort has) know to hold the bags until the next morning. Then, put out the 'privacy please' hanger on your room door, outside. Call down for the bags as soon as you want in the morning.

And yet another TA hands out bad info and the guest pays for it. That really frosts my patootie. And of course Disney CMs tried to make it up to the guest.who was in the wrong. Drives me nuts.
No wonder guests yell and scream at CMs...look at the stuff they get to make them happy.:confused3

If for some reason the airline lost my luggage on the direct flight, my only real necessity would be my medications. Actually, even they aren't very important. You can always ask for a toothbrush and some toothpaste at the desk or buy it at the resort store should your luggage not get on your flight for some reason.

You say that the medications are the only thing that are important, but you posted this, too.

Twice I have got to the room and no luggage after being at the pool all day. It's no fun when at 5:00 pm you are hanging around in a damp bathsuit and want to shower and dress for a dinner PS..

If your luggage is delayed or lost, the above would happen, too. So if you have plans to go out that evening, you NEED to have your outfit for that in your carryon, just in case.

... but with all the traveling we do and a full time job, I've become a last minute packer.

Since you do a lot of traveling, it would probably behoove you to get a 311 baggie that's filled with what you need, and just leave it ready to go. My husband, brother, and sis in law all travel a lot, and they have baggies all ready to go. So you get the right sized bottles once, you refill them as needed, you remember that contact solution is exempt from the baggie as long as you declare it, and you just have it ready to go! Makes it even easier to be a last-minute packer.
