Anyone have great recipes for when you're TENT camping???
We have a little grill and may have grill access there.

I need easy prep - and not too expensive.
Oh yeah - and easy to carry along.

We're camping for four days.

Let um rip...:sunny:

Thank you!!!

I prep and package everything in ziplocs ahead of time (cut up veggies, prepare hamburger patties, etc...) We use those foil cooking bags to grill whole meals in one pouch. It's very easy and cleans up in a flash.

Chicken with veggies
Steaks with potatoes, mushrooms, onions
Burgers for the whole family
Veggies with shake and bake seasoning are great on the grill.

Also, the little wooden skewers make grill cooking user friendly. Just don't forget to soak the skewers in water prior to cooking or they can catch fire.

Shrimp kabobs
Teriyaki chicken w/ veggies (soy sauce/pineapple juice marinade)

You're absolutely right to keep it simple. But that doesn't mean it can't be yummy!

A lot depends on how close the car access is! Part of my GS troop is working on their Silver Award right now and doing a Camping Fun 101 theme. Tonight they were planning the "cooking station". And kept reminding themselves to KISS it, they've learned the hard way about planning too much!

We only tent camp as a troop. And eat very well when we do. Different from backpack cooking. If you have access to (borrow perhaps) a dutch oven you can do really easy and yummy things in there. Try the www.macscouter.com web site for lots of cooking ideas too.

The pie irons can be used from everything from breakfast (eggs in toast) to dessert (turnovers). A little spray oil (like Pam), couple slices of bread and the filling.

In or on the fire works best if you have a grate.

If you're going to do bacon don't try the traditional frying pan routine - put it in a pot instead and just stir it around so it doesn't stick until it is done as you want it to be.

In the coals you can do baked potatoes (wrap in foil) and have whatever toppings you want. And then our favorites-banana boats!

Ok, yea, we like dessert. Take a banana, slice it (still in skin) lengthwise, tuck in chocolate squares. Wrap in foil and place in coals for about 10 minutes. Remove carefully - think the banana french toast at Tonga's in WDW...yes it is that yummy.

Ok, I already ate dinner, but all this food talk is making me hungry again. Better get up and do something or I will eat!

Pjlla & Deb -
Thanks for the great references. I've just gotten into cooking and I'm looking forward to trying many new things. Someday I may be lucky enough to marry the Prince Charming I'm dating and raise some little ones. If that happens - I want to be well equipped in the kitchen.
Thanks for your help!!!

Don't forget to add mini marshallows and peanut butter chips too!

When we tent camp a fri night traditions is meatball subs with a salad. very easy to make and a big hit with all our friends that go with us.

Dutch Oven Crisp
This is so easy!! And you can make it apple or cherry or blueberry. Actually anything that comes in pie filling.

2 Lg cans pie filling

2C oats

2C Flour

1Tbs Cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

1/2 C white sugar

1/2 C brown sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 C butter (not melted) more if needed

Line 12" Dutch oven with foil. Pour in pie filling. Combine dry ingredients. Add butter and mix to make crumbly. Cover pie filling. Bake until filling starts to bubble through crust and crust starts to brown. About 30 minutes. We used 16 briquettes on top and 10 on bottom.

Monkey Bread

4 cans Biscuits
1 c Sugar
1 c Brown sugar
4 tbs Cinnamon
1 stick Butter
Cut biscuits into quarters. Mix sugar and cinnamon in plastic bag. Drop quarters into bag and coat well. Place in dutch oven. Melt butter in lid and pour over quarters. Bake 350 for 35 min.

CARMELIZED BAKED APPLES ON A STICK

1 cooking apple (Granny Smith, Jonathan, or Rome apple)

1/8 cup sugar

1 Tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

Combine sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a 1 pint, sealable plastic bag and set aside. Place apple on cooking stick. Roast inches over coals, gradually turning apple so all sides will cook. Roast until the skin puckers all over, about 15 minutes. Carefully pull off the skin, using a fork or small stick. If the peel doesn't come off easily, cook the apple longer. Put apple into open plastic bag (Leave it on the stick!) and roll in the sugar mixture until coated. Return apple to heat, turning slowly, allowing sugar to melt (about 2 minutes). East it in a bowl of off your stick after it has cooled.

Root Beer Chicken

Marinate 8 chicken breasts in a bottle of teriyaki sauce for 8 hours or overnight. Dump chicken and marinade into Dutch oven. Add 2 bottles of IBC root beer. Cover with 20 coals on top and l0 coals on bottom for 40-60 minutes until chicken is done.

Wow! What great recipes!
Thank you so much for adding to the post. I'm collecting, collecting, collecting.

Some day I plan to be a marvelous chef and you've helped move me along!
