On our last cruise we flew into MIA and stayed in hotel around airport then took shuttle to POM. Well DH and I didn't really like MIA or Miami itself, Idk it was just CRAZY and expensive :confused3 We had always cruised out of PC and liked that much better. So , has anyone ever flew into MCO then drove to POM ? Also can you rent a van at MCO then drop off at POM ? We will be flying in the day before our cruise.

I am doing this, you can pick up a rental from MCO and drop it off at MIA! Then we are shuttling to the port. It was an easy rental and not expensive.

Yes you can do one way rentals. The ride is about 3.5 hours. You will also have to factor in gas and tolls too. Miami-Dade county is electronic toll only so consider purchasing yourself a Sunpass before your trip and set up your account. There is on option to select rental car in your Sunpass account. Toll violations are very high - $100 per incident.

Thanks:) Now I need to choose a hotel somewhere in between the two. I tried Disney's resort on Vero Beach but it was already booked for Mar2016!! Geez!!

Have you considered flying into FLL rather than MIA? It's a MUCH shorter drive and you could just take a taxi to POM rather than rent a car.

I have, It seems airfare is cheaper flying into Orlando than Miami and Ft.Lauderdale. When it comes time to book airfare I guess we will see. If we stayed in West Palm Beach the day before then we wouldn't have that much of a drive the next morning. That's what I'm thinking anyway

What day does your cruise leave? If it is a weekday be prepared for HEAVY traffic on 95 heading towards Miami from WPB. I live just south of WPB in Boca Raton and do not go near 95 in the morning or evenings.

I'll be honest with you, the hassle (to me) of a drive in an unfamiliar location and the cost of the car would be a far worse option than flying into MIA or FLL. Once I'm in vacation, I like to leave the driving to others.

"just" north of Fort Lauderdale is Pompano Beach. We've stayed at the Beachcombers Resort and Villas. Nice older hotel ON the beach.

If you are not there during holidays or school breaks the prices are reasonable.

In the morning of the cruise we have always driven to the Miami airport, returned the car and taken the Disney shuttle to the port. Could have saved some money ::yes:: and time :confused3 by dropping the car off closer to the port and taken their shuttle (most don't have them-go figure) or a taxi. Could have taken a taxi from the airport and saved a little money -- but heck we like watching Mickey and the gang head out for a cruise.

We have not had any / much of a delay heading to the airport from Pompano because we usually are not leaving the hotel until 9 or 9:30. Most of the traffic has cleared out by then.

Since VB is DVC, I don't think it's open to booking by anyone* until 11 months out, so April 2015. Try again then.

*I could be wrong, but even cash stays I think are based on points being traded out, and you can't do that that early. I don't think.

You'll have to run the numbers with the rental car. Some one way rentals will be expensive, some won't be that much. If your trip is March 2016, you are NOT going to find the deals yet (if you can even book that far out!). Once you do find a rate that's decent, if it's refundable/changeable, book it, then look every so often. Quite a lot of the time, rental cars drop the closer you get. But you don't want to bet everything on that, so book something you can live with before gambling that prices will go down.

Read this thread....has pictures and my post from our MCO rental to MIA experience is there. Basically it was very easy and convenient. Got a great rate one way rate for Alamo through Costco. You can also find discount codes for rental cars at www.mousesavers.com

Checking the MouseSavers codes can be time consuming, but can save you a lot of money. Different locations with the same codes can yield different results - the code that gives the best discount at one location may not be the best at other locations.

I've saved up to 75% by working the codes - and that CAN add up to serious money.

For our previous cruises I always used a code from Mousesavers and I've always gotten really good deals. We have usually gotten a van (one way) so we can drive around and see the sights, get alcohol , supper and maybe some last minute stuff. Although Budget always had a shuttle to the port, at least they did in PC.

I do remember my husband returning the van to budget , taking their shuttle back to hotel , then taking hotel shuttle to the port. Port Canaveral was a lot easier in regards to budget drop offs/shuttle service. The Disney transfers aren't that bad at $20 per person. I just might end up doing that.

We did this last week. It's a boring drive, but not really that bad. We chose this option because flights to MCO were cheaper, and we figured that we could also squeeze in a day at MK that way.

We always use Avis for car rentals since I get a corporate discount from them from my work. On the way there, we picked up the car at MCO and dropped off at an Avis location in Miami Beach near our hotel, and took a taxi to the port the next day. There's also a downtown Miami Avis location that offers a shuttle to/from the port, which is what we did when we returned from the cruise.

No traffic to worry about when we arrived in Miami ~4:00pm on a Saturday, but there *was* traffic to deal with leaving the city ~8:30am on Friday.

We live near West Palm Beach. The airport there is nice and so is the city.
