McGwire admits steroid use

Really!?!?! Let me take a quick check of my I'm surprised-O-Rometer. Ah, all the way down on 0, I guess I am not surprised at all.

Cards fan here, but not surprised. The last 1/2 of the 90s and early 00s probably had more guys that did cheat than didnt.

McGwire, Sosa, ARod, Palmerio, Clemens, Pettite.....the list goes on and on.....

:scared1: <-- my very sarcastic surprised face

So does this mean he comitted perjury when he told the Congressmen investigating this that he never used? Aren't you under oath when you testify before Congress? And why did he wait 5 years to admit the truth ? Is there a statute of limitations on prejury? Isn't lieing to Congress what got Clinton in trouble? ( Note: History question, NOT political!) ( And besides fooling around,I mean!)

I for one would like to see some of these athletes have to own up & have the same rules applied to them as to everybody else. They always seem to get around rules.:sad2:

I am not an attorney but my understanding from past events is that someone can testify before congress under oath or not. If you aren't under oath I don't believe you can commit perjury.

Some Google searching led me to the conclusion that the statue of limitations is as low as 3 years and as high as 5 depending on the venue. I'm sure a DIS attorney will chime in with details (a real one who is a member of the BAR and not of the Google-BAR as I am).

didn't he just say he wasn't going to talk about the past or his past actions? I don't think he ever said he didn't use them when talking to Congress, only that he was advised by his attorney not to comment.... Palmeiro is the one who said "I've never used steroids, period."

He never admitted it in the hearings- so no perjury unlike Palmero (sp) who said he NEVER did it then tested positive later. MLB knew they (McGwire, Sosa, Bonds...) were using BUT they turned a blind eye during the summer of the home run race so they could "save baseball" .

oh please, the guy looked like hulk hogan, lol, is there anyone who actually thought he DIDN'T use steroids? ROFL!

I hope no one is surprised. :lmao:

I'm not surprised that he used steroids but kind of surprised that he's now admitting to it.

This coming from a Cubs fan that was sure that both he and Sammy weren't hitting all of those home runs without some help.

So should there now be a little * in the record books?

We were big McGuire fans in this house. He was with the A's for a long time before St. Louis. We were among those who believed that he did "use". But, you have to remember that was the era of no testing. MLB turned a blind eye to the whole mess. I'm sure that MOST big hitters from those years used.

As far as the * - if he and Bonds are going to be subjected to the *, then any record breaker from a few decades needs one too. I can't be convinced that guys breaking records then didn't use (they would have used steroids just because of the "level playing field" argument. They couldn't compete with the guys using, so they "had" to
use too.)
