considering it is "cheap, fast food". I don't eat out or go to fast food places much but yesterday I swung into McD's for DD and her boyfriend. The order was for a medium double cheese burger meal and a medium big mac meal and it cost $15.00. Really...for that junk?

Some chicken breasts and root veggies for 6 people would be around that price. Just throw them in the oven for 30 minutes.

Why do people pay so much for fat, sugar water and salt? :confused3 or maybe it is regional? or maybe i am getting old and $15.00 really isn't much?
Gosh one or 2 nights of that a week would start a nice savings account for a kid.

We find that you can spend a lot at fast food places if you don't watch how you order.

I think that people often stop for convenience. If you're out and about and busy, it's sometimes easier to grab something at such a place.

As for cost, if you eat off the dollar menu you can spend very little.

That doesn't sound right ot me. Big Mac meal here are around 6.00 and double are like 5.00. I bet you got charged the wrong price.

It's because you didn't order stuff the "right way." I worked at McDonald's for awhile, and I can easily get food for 4 people on $10, and we're pretty big eaters. I also wonder if she didn't get a double quarter pounder instead of a regular double cheeseburger. A double cheeseburger meal here is $4 something, a double quarter pounder is $7, and a big mac is about the same. Most places don't even advertise a regular double cheeseburger meal, except the mini meal which is $3.

Also, there really isn't a lot of reason to not order off the dollar menu if you just want burgers. You can add Big Mac sauce to any burger, some places charge 50 cents, but that's still cheaper, same with tomatoes and any extra garnishes. The only really "expensive" thing at McDonalds is chicken, and even that's just in relation to the rest of the menu.

McD's can be very pricey. I am always surprised! Once, when we were really broke, we ate at McD's for $3-a McDouble each and shared a value sized soda. Now we're not as frugal when we order, and I think perhaps we should be!

I think it really depends on location. I live in Connecticut, and meals are often over seven dollars. When I visit my parents in PA, I notice the meals on the road are often up to five dollars cheaper.

I hunted down the receipt. Ok it was $13.81. The breakdown is:

1 med Dr pepper 1.59
1 med coke 1.59
(aren't the beverages supposed to be included in the meal?)

1 big mac meal 4.60
1 double cheese burger meal 3.89
(i forgot about the added bacon strip for 1.00)

subtotal 12.67 tax 1.14 total 13.81. (A $5 and a $10 more or less gone.)

It seems expensive. I am not real familiar with "the dollar menu" but I will do that next time.
or more likely I'll ask DD if she can survive in starvation mode until we get home.

Yes you could cook some chicken and root veggies for 6 people and it would be the same price as feeding a couple at McDs, but the point of going to McDs isn't to get the same kind of meal you could cook at home for the same price.

The beverages are included in the meal price, but listed seperately on the receipt. Our meals are around $7 here so plus tax it would be over $15.

That about 7 dollars a person. Where else could you get a burger and fries and a drink for that

$7 a meal is about right. Ridiculous, but that's what we pay here too.

I get the kids meals for myself it's about $5 bucks for a double cheeseburger, smal fries, and small drink. It's enough for me. Or I get a dollar mcdouble and share my girls fries and just drink some of theirs or have a drink at home.

And just as an aside, why is one double cheeseburger over $1.59 and the "mcdouble" is a buck. What's the difference?

The double has two pieces of cheese the Mcdouble only has one

It's the darn piece of cheese (double cheeseburger=two patties and two pieces of cheese, mcdouble=two patties and one piece of cheese, at least around here). I hope that extra cheese slice brings everyone $.59 worth of joy.

They are included on the price of the menu, but on the receipt it will be broken down because not everyone orders a soda, instead they order a frappe or something, which would just be the cost of the difference.

I used to work at McDs way back in my high school days. I once had a customer go nuts on me because he ordered a quarter pounder with no cheese and I didn't know I had to take the $.20 (at the time) off for the cheese slice. I had to call a manager to refund him two dimes. :sad2:
