Last night my husband and daughter went to McDonalds. She got a kids meal which included a toy based on the movie The Spiderwick Chronicles. Apparently in this movie theres some sort of magical eyepiece that allows you to see fairies and goblins and other fantasy creatures. The toy is based on this concept. Theres an eyepiece and a little fairy creature.
The disturbing thing about this toy is that it contains a small LED in the fairy that you are supposed to point directly at your eye while looking through the eyepiece. The directions call for holding this just 12 inches from your eye.
This LED is fairly bright and could, in my opinion, possibly cause damage to the optic nerve. My husband, after trying this toy just twice, had a hard time seeing through the eye he was using.
Im not sure what sort of campaign could or should be mounted since this toy will be available for just a few weeks. I can say that Ill be boycotting McDonalds for a while.
