Mazatlan, Mexico

Hey Frank!

I never heard of Mazatlan until I booked this cruise. What do you recommend that is "not-to-be-missed?" I want to make the most of our West Coast experience.

Jo

Mazatlan is a great City. Aprox 600,000 people and many things to see. I would recommend that you take the City tour as you are a first timer here. It is around 3 1/2 hours and you get to see all the main spots in the city, including the cliff divers.
If you want a more detailed idea of the City tour tell me and I will tell you where they stop.
Have a great week!

Thanks for the infos Mazatlan Frank. I want to do the beach and stay right on the beach, do you have any hotels that you could recommend? And how far is this place from the airport? Do we need to exchange the $$ to Pesos or do they accept $$, they just have to convert it how much? When is the best time to go there? Thanks for your help.

Telly

In Mazatlan there are all kind of nice Hotels. El Cid is one of the biggest, some people like it some do not because it is too big. It is a 5 star though. One of my favorites is the Hotel Playa, it is in the Golden zone and it is a traditional Hotel in Mazatlan. 4 star but like a 5 star. It is also on the beach.
The airport is around 30 minutes away from the City. Money exchange is best at American Express and also a bank called HSBC after those, the Casas de Cambio (money exchange booths) and at the end the Hotels (they give you lowest rate of exchange). Mostly everyone takes US dollars but it is better to have Pesos because that way you get a better rate.
As for time, November thru April are nice months. Not too hot, not too humid. You better make your reservations in advance though because some days the Hotels are over booked.
Hope this helps you!

Thanks Frank...Tony's sounds wonderful.

We can't wait..see you in May 2006!

Hola Webray:
I am sure you will really enjoy it. I went there today with some friends and they enjoyed it a lot! Hope you do too!
Any other questions please ask!

Mazatlan Frank

Yep..
Tony's is sounding good to us too! Only 8 more months to go!

:sunny:

As I mentioned previously, Tonys is on the beach so you can have lunch and enjoy the nice beach there. It is in between Caravelle and Fiesta Inn Hotels. People get confused with one or two other restaurants called Tonys. Actually where Tonys is, there are another 2 restaurants which will try to pull you in with them. Ask for Tony Jr, he is a good friend and tell him I told you about the complementary drink (Beer, Margarita or Soft drink) with the meal.

Hope you enjoy as I do!

Carribean Baseball Series
From the 1st to the 7th of February 2005 we will be hosting the Carribean Baseball series, which would be similar to the World series you have in the US and Canada. The teams that play come from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Mexico. In Mazatlan we have a AAA Baseball team called Venados (Deers).

Mazatlan International Carnaval (Mardi gras)
As in Rio we have a Carnaval which has been going on since 1898 officially, but probably older then that. This coming year it is from the 10 to the 16th of Feb. The date was changed due to the Baseball series. It is normally the week before ash wednesday. There are parades, fireworks, concerts, you name it. Come down and have fun!

We have different types of Taxis in Mazatlan.
We have regular taxis which are painted green and white or red and white. We have Pulmonias (Pneumonias in English), they call them that way because of the taxi drivers, who would tell people to not ride on those vehicles like golf carts because they would catch a pneumonia, which is not true, but they were trying to make them look bad because they were the compitition of regular taxis. As the time went by, the pneumonias got so popular that the taxi drivers tried to compete, so they bought the VW´s The thing, and made them similar but trying to call them Penicilins, because they were the cure to pneumonia. The name did not stay so we call them Safaris. Also we have these red nissan pick ups with a little roof in the back and also benches, which seat around 8 or 10 people. These were called first Bronquitis but now called Aurigas. These are great for large families and also cargo.
This is a little more information about Mazatlan. I will talk about something else in my next reply.
Have a great time all of you!

P.S. I was a little busy working, so sometimes it is hard for me to show up here, but I do everytime I can. I enjoy giving information to all my good friends out there!

Amigos, while in Mexico, you see so much nice shinny stuff with the vendors, you tend to buy it because you start asking for a good price and they probably go down 300% off the original price, then you think you got a real good deal. Perhaps you did not get a good deal because it might be alpaca. Alpaca is like plated and it is not the real silver, although the vendors say it its. I would recommend that if you do want the real silver, go to a store. The stores normally always have the real silver. Silver is basicly sold by the weight, by the gram, normally around $1 to $2 us dollars per gram. So when on the street be aware, not all that shines is SILVER.

Have an nice week!

Hola, Mazatlan Frank!

My mom and I are going on the June 18th West Coast cruise. We would like some recommendations about a tour. My mom will be 75 by that time. She has had her knee replaced, but she can walk quite a distance just as long as she isn't rushed. We have never been to Mazatlan before and would like a tour that would give us a taste of the culture and a chance to shop. TIA

I would think that your choice would be taking a tour in a smaller vehicle like a van. You can find independent shore excursions and perhaps get a private tour where you do not have to walk much like when you go by bus. This same tour can take you shopping. Most of these private tours are custom made to your needs.

Hope this helps!

Everybody knows that Maztalan Frank is a tour guide in Maztalan don't you? You can PM him if you need specifics. He can't post his info here or they'll remove his thread.

ikohawaii, I think you misunderstood my post. I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't mean to sound so negative.

Thank you Mazatlan Frank for your response. Could you describe what the sidewalk/walkways are like in Mazatlan? What is the average temperature/humidity in mid-June? Is it rainy in June in Mazatlan? TIA
