Maybe the Stupidest question ever about Refillable Mugs

I have been to WDW several times, and refillable mugs have always been "invisable" to me. Never even saw them or knew what they were.

I know they create a lot of contraversy on these boards. I have no idea why.

In any event, here is the stupid question: What the heck are they and why do people get them?

Thank you. Now my questions are; How much does a soda cost. If you buy a soda at lunch, can you get it refilled during the same meal, or do you have to buy the mug for that?

A fountain beverage is about $2. One thing to know about mugs is that they are only refillable at your own resort - i.e. they won't get you drinks in the parks. And that often the refill station is not very convienient to your room. Personally, I don't drink that much pop in the hotel at WDW - we are usually getting our beverages in the parks. If you were going to spend a lot of time at the pool, it might be worthwhile. Then again, the mugs make a nice souvienier, so you can place some value on that.

(for instance, the AKL mug is refillable at Mara. Mara is convienient to the pool and if we were going to spend a lot of afternoons by the pool with kids who drank a lot of pop - might be worth it. But our room at AKL was down off the Sunset Savannah - way down the hall. Mara was not a convienent stop for coffee in the morning!)

We always purchase refillable mugs anywhere we stay. Hubby goes & gets us a Diet Coke while I start getting ready in the morning, so we always have something to drink to start off our day. We also get refills after a long day in the park, and if we come back for a mid-day break.

We always end up eating at least 4-5 meals at the food court & I think 5 drinks is usually the break even point - since we usually stay 10 days or more, we definitely get our money's worth out of the mugs. (and they do make a great souvenir, too!! ;) )

We're on the other side -- we've never bought refillable mugs. At WL, I didn't care for the size -- it seemed rather small and not the greatest value. At BC, CR, CSR and others, the mug appeared to be a better size/value, but we don't drink that much to make it worthwhile. Plus the hassle of traveling back to one or two spots at the resort to get a refill -- too much trouble for me.

Oh, the refill question....most (not all, but most) table service restaurants have free refills on pop. The counter service places will not have free refills.

I found the mug quite convenient. At POP, the food court is very near the bus stops, so with my refillable mug, I got coffee on the way out to drink while waiting for the bus, and soda (or cocoa, if it was late) on the way back in. I also then had the mug with me in the parks to fill with drinking foruntain water during the day (and if you ask nicely you can get free ice at counter service places). Of course, I also had a convenient place on my bag to clip the mug on once it was rinsed out, so carying it was not a problem.
That's how it worked for me. YMMV
