We need one standard size car and one minivan. Pick up 8/9/14 at Tampa airport and drop off 8/16/14 in Miami. We are cruising out of Miami, so preferably a company that has a rental agency at the port. I cannot find even a compact car under $700. The minivans are $900.

I even tried dropping off at Miami airport (we could take Super Shuttle to port) and still very expensive. Does the different drop off really raise the price that much? We have done it in the past, but it was never this high.

Any help or tips would be appreciated, thanks.

I would wait until closer to your trip to book the car. For whatever reason it seems that the further out you try to book the pricier it is.

First off you are looking way too early. You will find that the rates are better closer to the date of your trip. Just look at the Nov or Dec 2013 rental board thread on here. You will find folks just like you who were looking a rates several months before their trip and they too saw high rates. Yet as their trip got closer they got better rates
