Maybe my initial thoughts on Magicbands were prematurely negative

I have been reading about the enhancements of the magicbands on attractions that are coming, and thinking, wow, maybe they did think this through. For instance, heard that there will now be closing scenes with the ghostriders on HM that are personalized to the band wearer, such as holding up a Go Bulldogs sign with riders from Georgia, etc. Pretty neat.

Yes,the MyMagic+ "props" are finally being activated.

These are the attractions I know of so far with activated props(with many more to come including at the WDW Resorts):

iasw
HM
Space Mountain
Toy Story Mania
RnRC
EE
Aladdin/Jasmine Meet in Morocco

See, all that nonsense makes it even worse for me.

Not a fan of the "goodbye" bit on ET at Universal, and I can't believe they are using that ancient idea at WDW.

I love the enhancements. I like magic bands in the first place, and have found the convenience far outweighs any deficits for my family.

What if you don't want the association though? Not everyone is a fan of a sport, etc. I'm guessing they didn't think it through.

Nobody in my family is into sports. But we all recognize and know the local teams. If my kids were on a ride and suddenly saw a Vikings thing it would be very special to them. I'm still not 100% how I feel about the bands...they are cool but I always worry about technology like that. That said, it is what they are using so we have little choice in the matter. If we must use it, at least we can have something fun to show for it!

Don't see how it could remotely display a sports team for you. I think that's a rumor that someone started and not true at all. There's nowhere that I've seen on MDE to input your favorite sports teams. Let alone the licensing that Disney would have to pay for to display sports teams

And I don't see them just connecting the info from where your MDE says your from. Plenty of people are fans of sports teams that aren't currently where they live. In Southwest Florida I'm a Saints fan while two of my friends are Patriot and Lions fans. Would it just randomly put up a sports team from where you're close to..so I'd get the Tampa bay Bucs?

I didn't see any sports teams pop up when I was there last month, but the ghosts did hold up a sign that said they would see us in our home state...we were pretty shocked at first, lol, and then realized -- it's the bands.

It's pretty neat!! People complain about the weirdest things...

I do not consider privacy a weird thing to complain about, particularly when someone's children are involved. I can see where it makes for a neat experience for some, but I can also see where it could be worrisome for others.

Where did we get a invasion of privacy of children from a Go Bulldogs Georgia sign? Did I miss something in the post?

Well true but why is Universal Orlando still have an outdated ancient ET ride that few kids would know a thing about the movie its based on? Universal Hollywood closed their ET in 2003 and Universal Japan closed in 2009.

Okay, I'm trying to figure out how this is going to endanger anyone's children. Are you worried another guest might glimpse a reference to the child's home state and use that one small fact to win their trust and lure them away from their parents for nefarious purposes? Or follow them back to their state, and somehow figure out how to track them to their home?

I'm really not understanding how this is supposed to be a "privacy" issue. Or a child safety one!

Personally, I think it sounds very magical and I really hope it's all still up and working when we get back in 2017!

Lets others know where they are from with some rides also calling out peoples names. Some people that would be no issue but for others it may be an invasion of privacy because they didn't volunteer such information to be public. Again, for some its no big deal and others it is.

Similar to some people not wanting to give their name at fast food restaurants that is then called out publicly when their order is ready.

This is a real thing? :scared:

I feel sorry for anyone who lives in so much fear.

(That said, I do know people who like to give silly names at restaurants, just to hear the server call out, "Gandalf!" or some such thing. Yes, I know nerdy people.)

Guess I just have wider shoulders than some. I guess I don't figure someone is riding in the next car on HM writing down where I'm from (and if they saw a "Go Bulldogs" sign, where in Georgia would you start looking for me?) or If a CM calls me by first name the next person is writing that down too.

I cannot say it is something I worry about, but I can understand why someone may not be comfortable with their children's information being made public or may be concerned for the precedent it may set. Privacy is not the sacred cow it once was, but to some it is still very valuable. It seems like it would be easy enough to allow guests to opt out of this extra bit of "magic" if they so choose.

Unfortunately there are people that are this afraid, the least of their problems is having your name and where you are from displayed on a screen at Disney, I'm sorry, but there are tons of other ways people can find out your name and where you're from right in your own backyard.
As for me I was super excited when I saw my name displayed at IASW, you see my name is Yulady and that's a sort of name you can't find on a key chain :D so it was pretty neat seeing that.

I think the easiest way to "opt out" would be to keep your magic bands in a shielded purse or bag. I know I've seen people discussing this as a way of preventing Disney from "tracking" them around the park.

As long as your magic bands aren't readable, you aren't going to get any magical extras. Or ride photos, or anything like that. The only "risk" is when you tap in for a fastpass, the castmember will see your name pop up and might decide to address you by it. But you could dodge even that, and do Disney almost completely "off the grid", if you chose not to make any fastpasses. :)
