Just wanted to share my experience. I had a 10 night trip planned for 5/10 - 5/20. We were 2 nights in a grand villa at BLT, and 8 nights in a 2 bedroom at Beach Club. I had borrowed some 2021 points for this trip. I called DVC a month ago because my daughter and I are both nurses and even if Disney was open, I wasn’t sure we would be allowed to take the time off. I wanted to see what would happen if I cancelled on them vs they cancel on me. They assured me all my points would be returned to the use years they came from and said many times “we are here for you” and “you will lose nothing”. Well, two weeks ago, I called to cancel and they came through on their promise. All of my points have been returned, borrowed points were returned to the year I borrowed from. They refunded my Hoop Dee Doo reservation that I prepaid for. My tickets will remain in my MDE acct and will be a credit toward future ticket purchase. I’m so sad that this trip isn’t happening...it was a year in the making, but it is what it is. We will have one hell of a vacation next May...Ive got almost 1000 points to use...yippee. Now on to planning next year.

The takeaway from all this is to use borrowed points for every future trip. Those are the most protected points out there right now.

I agree. I don't think there has been a problem with people getting their borrowed points returned to the correct year. I think the problem has been with Banked and Current points. So, the positive experience is not a surprise. Ask those who had 2018 banked points and I bet their experience was not great at all.

In my case, I have an August UY. I used 75 2019 points, 125 2020 points and bought 20 OTU points. On my call, I was told "as a courtesy" if I canceled my trip right then they would refund the money for the OTU points or they would expire in July 2020. Uh, no first of all they should expire in July 2021 since my trip was in 2020 and second, I will pitch a fit if they don't give me my money back if I can't use those points. I am hanging on to my trip since my banking window has passed and hoping that at least they will have a soft opening beginning May 23/24.

I would not take what is being done now for borrowed points as somehow a change for long term,

IMO, everyone should still follow the same advice as always in terms of when to travel and on what points to maximize flexibility.

OTU points are based on the UY of travel, not the calendar year. So, the CM was correct that your points should have experienced July 31st, 2020 since your May 2020 trip is still in your Aug 2019 UY.

I am glad that you were refunded,

Given the UY's you stated above:
The 75 2019 points are current year points could have been banked up until 3/31/20, but if you did not bank them by that date they will expire on 7/31/20. (hope you are having fun playing the new game of DVC chicken)

The 125 2020 points are borrowed points, since the August 2020 UY starts on 8/1/20 and your May trip is before that. (those should be returned under the current "exception to the published rules of the POS policy" that DVC is now allowing.)

The 20 OTU points you purchased went into your 2019 UY since your trip is prior to the 8/1/20 start of your 2020 UY, so those OTU points would expire on 7/31/20, the same as all your other unused and unbanked 2109 UY points. (However, it seems like those OTU will be refunded if the parks are closed on your scheduled arrival date, again under the new "exception to the published rules of the POS policy")

In my opinion, DVC should not put members like yourself into the position where you could potentially lose your 2019 points if you did not cancel and bank by 3/31/20. ETA: That is the way I think life should be.
Also, as you pointed out, "Ask those who had 2018 banked points and I bet their experience was not great at all." (#sanity, inside joke)

I KNOW my situation and made the decision NOT to bank by 2019. I didn't ask any questions because I have been schooled on my points. I was only expressing that the people who may lose their 2018 points are the one out of luck. I had the chance to bank by 3.31.2020 -

Sorry for the way you interpreted my post.
I was trying to be somewhat "tongue in cheek", and obviously did it poorly. I intended my main point to be the last paragraph, which I have edited to add "That is the way I think life should Be"

I commend you for taking the high road with regard to possibly losing your 2019 points.
We also have an Aug UY, and with a trip we had scheduled for June, we were also forced to play the game of DVC chicken prior to 3/31/20.

ETA: Thank you for the great quote you sent me in our conversation.
