I know you are the guys to ask. What if I book something now and the AP rates come out it they cover the dates I have booked. Can I do something to get the better rate?

as long as that rate is available at the resort you are staying at. What I mean is, you need to call asap to make sure you have the best chance to get the rate applied to your ressie.

so I am understanding that I can book now for January. THen I keep watching these boards and the passholder discounts, if any, on the WDW web site. Then if something comes up that will reduce my rate, I can call and ask them to apply it?

yes you can ask but it might not be available at that resort. If not ask the CM what resorts will accept it and maybe you might want to switch resorts if the price is right.
