May 30, 2009 - Western Cruise Magic

homespun (Karen): I haven't really thought about doing the excursions on our own since this is our first time at those ports. I think I would feel more comfortable with DCL. I'll check into it, though. I don't know if we're doing the one with the snorkeling. I am a non-swimmer, so I want to find something that I can do. That's why I'm not sure about the dolphin excursion. If you have to be a swimmer, than that one's out for me.

mmmagic7754: Yeah, we were on that cruise last year. Both dd's went to the teen club a couple of times, but didn't do any of the teen excursions. Your son's name isn't Joey, is it? My youngest talked about some guy named Joey and she's hoping he'll be on this cruise, too.

Do you give gifts everyday of the cruise or just once?

Are we planning a Dis Meet? I haven't read everyone of the posts but what I have read hasn't mentioned one. I was thinking it might be a nice way for my son to meet some of the older "kids." :grouphug:

Thanks! :flower3:

Ok, is there anybody planning on dressing up for formal night? From what I've read there is only one family that will be dressing but not in a tux/evening gown. DH loves wearing his tux as long as he's not the only one wearing one. It's funny, but he'd rather wear his tux than his suit. I enjoy dressing up also but feel the same way. I don't wear evening gowns but the dresses I wear when he wears his tux are pretty dressy. I'd also like to dress up for some pictures.

Karla in Kansas

Hey Karla,

Not to worry...there will be others dressed up. My family will dress (probably a suit, not a tux - DH hates his tux...says the shirt cuts his neck - whatever!). We are traveling with 4 (maybe 5) other families & they are all dressing as well. Probably the same - DH's in suits & DW's in gowns varying from floor length to dressy cocktail. DD's in "Dance" type dresses & DS's in khacki's w/ jackets & ties. You won't be the only ones dressed if you choose to do it. It's fun!! Goodness knows we don't have a lot of opportunity to do it in "real life". :laundy:

BTW, Brucechase, thanks for the tip on the Infinite Dress - VERY COOL!! Will have to check into it!! It may be a great way to find the board members...just look for the women wearing an Infinite Dress!!! :rotfl2:

I've go got get busy planning now...I can hardly believe we're cruising in 88 days-woo-hoo!!!

To one Karen from another :goodvibes

We're doing the same thing. We're doing the semi sub with the snorkeling in GC and we booked the dolphin swim on our own in Cozumel.

If you're going to book on your own, click on the chat with a reservationist--it paid off for me as I was offered a discount for booking that way (close to what they give groups). Maybe it will save you $ too, unless you're going through Disney.

Looking forward to cruising with you.

Karen
What time are you going to do the dolphin thing?? 1:00??? I'm online with them now and they offereed 5% off our booking...just for the encounter as its cheapest and my 6 and 1 y.o. would be free.

Also there was mention of some trolley tour in key west....can anyone lmk the specifics on that ir a website with info about it? thanks!

Looks like we have a good range of ages for the kids. I kind of wish I wasn't suprising my girls 2 weeks before the cruise so they could email some of the other kids, but maybe they can hit it off with someone 2 weeks before the cruise by emailing!
really? To me it looks heavy on the teens, way less on the youngsters in the club (besides mostly 7yr olds) LOL (I'm not complaining! Those are the ages of my kids! LOL Just something I'm just now noticing......)

We are planning to fly in Thurs. so we can take the kids to AK on Fri(we have non-expiring tix with 3 days left on them) Anyway I need to find a cheap, nice place to stay on Thurs. night near WDW and then I guess book near the port to be able to park our rental car for free. Just wondering if any of you are staying overnight near the port and if so where at & for what price?? Thanks!!!!
I think a lot of others are- you may want to look back thru the thread as we have discussed this a time or two. We're staying at FW until the day of the cruise and then parkng our vehicle/TT at the port- so I'm not much help there but many others are staying near the port that are on this thread and they should be able to help!

BibbiddyBobbidyBoo:About the fish extenders:

On the last cruise I gave out a few times but it was a longer (15nt) cruise. I don't think you HAVE to give more than once during the cruise. It is easier when the kids are younger because it's easier, and cheaper, to find things they'd like. I have to rethink my FE gifts now that I realize we have so many teens on this cruise- they aren't going to like the same things little kids would like- and I will probably only give once during the cruise. Not just because of the gifts/teen thing- but also because it's a shorter cruise and therefore less time to spend giving them out- but then again it's a much smaller group on this FE list this time too. I dunno- probably once. Unless I come across something really inexpensive that all these teens would like. LOL

I'm really at a loss for what teen BOYS would like. I mean maybe it's because i don't quite have a teen boy yet? But mostly because I can see teen girls liking things like lipgloss, cute pens/mechanical pencils, journals, etc. -but have no idea what teen boys would like that's inexpensive...... hmm I have to do some thinking! LOL

LOL! That is so true- if it fits me right.... I bought it after bruce's post. I hope it looks okay. I am short so this basically one length fits whatever size you are worries me- and I'm not sure if it will be as easy for me to change it or find which way I like the best. wishing myself luck on that! LOL

Also there was mention of some trolley tour in key west....can anyone lmk the specifics on that ir a website with info about it? thanks!
Old Town Trolley- and the link to the cpn is on page 14 or 15 I think. I'll try to find it for you and repost it. But you can google old town trolley (that's what I keep doing because I keep forgetting to put it in my favorites LOL) and they do have a website. It's the same as DCL excursion uses- except on the DCL excursion it's more expensive AND with the DCL excursion you have to stay on the trolley the entire tour -just ride around and can't get off. If you do it on your own you can get off/on at their many stops and visit things you want to, eat, shop, etc. I might not get off but then I might. I like having the freedom to do what I want. (the reason I say I might not is I'm alone with my kids AND I don't really want the extra cost of admission to places. So if I feel comfortable with wandering with them alone- primarily having to depend on their behavior that day and whether or not I think they'll listen and stay with me that day LOL and also having to depend on whether or not there is something we want to see/etc. that we wouldn't necessarily have to pay an admission to see it- kwim?) but I just want the freedom to decide and not stuck on the trolley for the entire tour.

Here's the link to the cpn- scroll way down to old town trolley. It's for a child free w/paying adult. I'm using it for 2 adults/2 free kids. :)

http://www.fla-keys.com/ValuCation/
GREAT!!! Thanks so much...also is anyone thinking of doing the butterfly garden or dolphin research center? I'll have to check and see if the trolley stops near there.
Is there a plan as to what time to meet to get on the trolley or is everyone just going themselves with their family? I will check out more info. on it...sorry if I'm being a pest! I know 2 things we definitely wan to do...eat frozen choc. covered kl pie and go to the southernmost point!

Wow, I work for a couple of days and I am so far behind. Thought I would update the "list". Sorry about the name Bibbidybobbidyboo - I must of looked at it for 10 minutes and still couldn't tell what was wrong with it :confused3 .

Right now there are 110 Disboard members and their family on the list. I just got these from all the posts. Here is the list of everyone posting on this meet thread. If I have it wrong, let me know.

I need emails for a couple of the FE group so I can send this out to them. I will follow up this with an email to anyone who wants the list that way. It might be easier.

I think there will be an explosion of people on or about March 15. There is a large wait list at some of the travel agents for this cruise just waiting for the Cat12 to open up again. If there are some cancelling at the 75 day mark, I betcha things will open up.

We need to decide a meet place and time. The time right around the sail away party might be good. Right after there will be some of us getting ready for main dining. I wonder if we can wear the "traditional" lime green something or other so we can easily identify everyone. Just thinking, I am open to ideas.

There are about 8 doing the trolley in KW. I can get everyone on a list for that too.

Sorry for being long winded, just trying to catch up. I'm getting nervous that this is coming way too fast. As much as I am ready for the cruise, I just need some time!!!!!!

homespun (Karen): I haven't really thought about doing the excursions on our own since this is our first time at those ports. I think I would feel more comfortable with DCL. Karen

My husband doesn't swim at ALL and he's going to do the interacting with the dolphins in the shallow area where there is a fence to hold on to. Then when DS & I go into the deeper area for the dorsal fin swim, DH's going to pass and stay in the fenced/shallow area.

You'll probably just want to do the Dolphin Discovery, not the swim--sounds like that was DHs comfort level since he's not a swimmer but they said he didn't have to do that and then we'd have photos of all of us together. Otherwise, we'd have to attend separately since they are 2 different experiences.

If you have any questions, just click on the chat on their website - they are amazing and so patient. I have copies of my transcripts and I chatted with them about so many things. If you want I can send them to you since we probably had some of the same questions. Let me know if you want me to. You can still book through Disney and then you won't need to worry about transportation, but it's good to get answers right from the horse's mouth sometimes.

I think the Lime Green is good -- if someone doesn't have something lime green colored we could wear a Lime Green Ribbon (like the pink breast cancer ribbon), but maybe someone has a brilliant idea.

Not sure on where to meet since this is my 2nd cruise, 1st on the Magic. Where have DIS groups met on other cruises?

I got some lime green Mickey Ears from Home Depot. Just go to the paint aisle and the paint chips are mickey ears. Actually I now have about 125 mickey ear paint chips just in case other kids on the cruise wants some to decorate their door.

Thanks brucechase! You are doing a great job organizing it all. Lime green sounds like a good plan. I'll put down a trip to Home Depot for paint chips for the weekend. :cool1: We are on the 90 day or less countdown. :woohoo:

Tell the girls "sorry not Joey" his name is Lyle. What are your DD's names?

Caroline and Kelley

Oh, that would be great if you could send those copies! I know my girls would want to do the swim. Maybe I need to go to the YMCA and take some lessons before the cruise.

I will be making a trip to Home Depot this week!

brucechase: Great job!

We are probably going to do the trolley on our own, also.

I know what you mean about the cruise coming up too fast. We were booked on the August 22nd Western until I changed dates this past Sunday. It's really coming fast for me! Now I have 3 months less to plan everything, but I'm so excited that we're going in May instead of August. I think the weather will be much better.

GREAT!!! Thanks so much...also is anyone thinking of doing the butterfly garden or dolphin research center? I'll have to check and see if the trolley stops near there.

So far we don't have a time to meet- it's just something that has been discussed very recently once we realized how many of us are doing the trolley on our own. LOL
I, for one, am a go for meeting somewhere (like on our last cruise we meet in the atrium area before going to the fort en masse :rotfl: ) as long as it's not too early! I really don't want to get up early if not necessary. I don't know if that will work for everyone else's schedule but DH is not diving until after lunch- and won't be back for main dining- so I booked Palo late that night- and so I really don't want to have to get up everyone early. Is everyone else thinking of going early in the morning? Just curious...... maybe we can find a compromise if a lot of you are wanting to leave early for the trolley?

(ps. you are not being a pest at all!!!!)

I'd like to try some key lime pie there- only because my whole life (almost 40yrs of it LOL) I've heard about key lime pie in Key west- but other than that we'd rather eat on the ship (ie: not have lunch at Key West)- no sense spending that much on stuff I won't eat much and the kids will just want stuff we can get on the ship anyway... for free! LOL But the pie- yes. LOL

Thanks bruce... you had a lot of typing to do so I didn't really blame you for getting my long name misspelled. :)
Boy our FE list is getting longer isn't it! Last I heard it was 36... it's grown! woohoo! :)

Okay finally someone (in a group I've been in) is all for lime green- NOW I really REALLY have to lose weight so I can fit into my lime green shirt again. LOL Wearing something lime green or adding something (like something pinned on, etc.) works for me! hey what if we wore our lime green stuff at Key West when we make a mad exodus to the trolley- AND if we all got off to get key lime pie? Would they think we're a cult and key lime pie is what we worship?
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I thnk that would be funny. they might be a bit confused what is going on with all the lime shirts. LOL

Same here- except we usually go every 2yrs and just went to Panama Canal last summer- then booked 2010 end of summer.. then whamo changed the baltic to this cruise not too long ago. It's very weird for us to be already getting ready to go cruising again!

OMG I just realized I need to make different magnets for our doors! Most of the ones we have were personalized for that PC cruise! ack! :scared1:

Oh and about meeting on sailaway.... we usually do that on deck 10 but we (personal family I mean) don't usually stay up there long! It's so hot and sun beating down on you. It seems to always be pretty quick and everyone coming and going- meaing not everyone stays for everyone else to meet them. I wish we could figure out another place to do it if we don't have too large of a group. Even on the cruises I've been on that had HUGE groups of Dis'ers- there never seemed to be so many people up there during that- that we couldn't do it somewhere else! I dunno... they usually do it right before we have to get our lifevests on. I dunno- something about the time and being up on deck 10 in the heat of the sun -we just never went up there but for a moment and it seemed like everyone else was only popping up there for a moment too- so not too many there at once. I don't really know a solution to this (time/place) but just expressing what I have experienced- even with massive groups of DIS'ers going- and our group isn't that big (yet! LOL)

And another thing.. the first cruise we had special shirts made- but ofcourse no one wore them on the same days and such- I never really saw the shirts. (someone also made awesome buttons but we hardly ever saw anyone wearing those either!) I also never really saw hardly ANYONE from our large group the entire time and it was kinda disappointing. I knew they were there- just didn't know WHO was from DIS and who I'd been talking to for over a year and a half on the thread. yanno? I think I had it in my head that I'd be seeing people from the thread and talking to them throughout the cruise and it just didn't happen because we didn't recognize one another on the cruise.
On the 2nd cruise (also a large group of DIS'ers) we had lanyards and rubber wristbands- (plus had posted photos on a seperate website made just for that group/cruise) and I recognized a lot more people that way during the cruise- mostly from the lanyards we had. I know we don't have those things this time.... that's why I like the idea of meeting up for the trolley- it's early in the cruise and atleast I'll be able to meet and recognize SOME people from our thread! LOL It was quite a bit more enjoyable to be able to recognize and say hi, chat for a moment -you know... throughout the last cruise. The first one was kinda lonely- when the kids weren't with us it was just me and DH the entire time.... except for a few moments out of the entire cruise- and I mean a few moments- that I recognized like 2 ppl- the entire cruise! LOL So lonely..... LOL As a family of 5 we were even seated at a table by ourselves- and not even close to the DIS group (first cruise is what I'm talking about) like we were supposed to be (supposed to be linked but DCL messed it up and put us clear across the room near those who used the same TA as us- complete strangers!) 2nd cruise we ended up dining without the kids and so we shared our table of 6 with another DiS family of 4 that was there- that was much more fun. This time kids will eat with us again (main seating this time) and I just know we'll end up at a table by ourselves again. :(

Just curious- do we ALL on this list have cat 12 gty rooms? If so.. we're going to have a lot of upgrades! How many cat 11 rooms are there? LOL

I'm all for wearing lime green. I have a lime green t-shirt that I got on the EB PC cruise in August, I also have matching light up lime green flip flops. Hopefully I can get my DH to wear his lime green shirt too, and I will have to get something for the girls.

I have a cat 12 gty room.

Thanks Bruce for posting the list and keeping up with it.
