May 26, 2007 (5/26/07) "First Magical Med Cruise!!" (The M&M's!)

Dear Sue, Who are you going to book with in Rome? We are going on the Trans Atlantic Repo with Disney and will be in Rome on June 6, 2007.
Our son is disabled and we thought a private guide would be good for us. Connie

Connie,

Christina is disabled also (she has spina bifida and has mobility issues). It's one of the reasons the private tour made sense in Rome. We can go at our own pace and shorten, lengthen or eliminate stops as necessary. Our guide's name is Stefano. He does tours both for cruise ships and for people staying in town. My TA went on a Med cruise last May. He has 12-year old twin boys and he said Stefano was great with them!

The cost for 3 of us is 450 Euros. The price increases up to 600 Euros for 8. Very reasonable. Stefano will book a guide at the Vatican (if you ask) for 60 Euro per hour. He will also get advance tickets to the Colusseum/Forum so you don't have to wait in line. My TA said he gave a choice of an authentic "local" restaurant for lunch or pizza by the Vatican.

PM me your email and I'll forward the contact info.

If anyone else is interested, he has a second guide (and my TA has received good feedback), so another group could go the same day we are.

Sweet Sue

Welcome Back Sue!

Glad to hear the skiing was good. Where did you go? We took the kids to Keystone 2 years ago and it was great. Their children's ski school was excellent. Owen was skiing from the top of the mountain by the 4th day and it was his first time. We're going to Tahoe for Easter week next year.

Kelly and I (and families) would like to go to see the fountains with you and Christina on Friday evening. I'd also like to see the dancing that you had mentioned in the Gothic Quarter on Saturday afternoon too. If you'd like to plan to meet up with us that would be great. Just let us know where to be. I'm planning to purchase a 2-day pass for the tourist bus. Amy is really looking forward to meeting Christina. I've been telling her about all of the little girls who are going to be on this trip with us...Zoe, Sophia, Lena and Christina. They're all going to have so much fun together.

We're also doing A Day at the Farm in Palmero and Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri For Families in Naples. We've got a private tour arranged for Rome but we may do the VIP Tour of the Vatican and Highlights of Rome through DCL instead. I've put in a request through the Vatican for a Scavi Tour but I haven't received a confirmation yet. The kids can't do the Scavi Tour but our tour guide has offered to watch them for us during that time if we end up getting booked. If we don't get the Scavi Tour I may switch to the DCL tour since it includes most of the things we were planning to see on our private tour as well as lunch. The private tour is 900 Euros for a car and driver and tour guide.

AWESOME! Christina will love seeing her friends on some of the tours (although I think she'll most love seeing Tracy on the Nice/Eze tour and Peter on hmmm, was it the Positano/Sorrento tour?).

I'd love to meet up with you on Friday night and Saturday too! I believe the fountains start at 7pm, but I'm not sure if that's true in May. Where are you staying? Maybe we could meet up near our hotels and walk together. My other thought was to take the tourist bus so I end up at Montjuic in time for the fountains. The bus stops there towards the end of the Southern route.
Saturday is a bit more confusing. Our hotel is near the Cathedral, so it makes more sense to leave our luggage at the hotel, enjoy the dancing and THEN go to the ship. But if we can't get a late checkout, then I'd rather haul the luggage to the ship and then return. I think the Sardana dancing starts at noon although I don't know how long it lasts. I'll get the details confirmed more as it gets closer.

As for skiing, we went to Winter Park, CO. They have the BEST adaptive ski program I've seen. For just $50, Christina got all of her specialized equipment, individual instruction for 3 hours with TWO instructors and a full-day lift ticket! Considering the price of an adult full day lift ticket is $81, this is a real steal. They are awesome with her. Christina did a great job. I'll post some pix once I get them downloaded to the computer (probably this weekend).

I've been to Keystone AND Tahoe before. Keystone is a GREAT place for family skiing. I used to live in Colorado and skied there many times. I grew up in the SF bay area, so Tahoe was where I skied many years. We usually skied at Squaw although I've been to most of the other Tahoe ski areas too.

How much is that in American currency?
Thanks Peter

sweetsue: thanks so much for adding us to your Roy Suite Tour list. We are SOOOO excited! We are not big alcohol drinkers, any recommendations on what to bring and where to buy it (in Barcelona that day)? I am worried about carrying beverages overseas!

Kpros: Were we supposed to tell you our favorite characters for the badges? I thought I may have read that somewhere but I am not sure. If so, mine is Little Mermaid (big surprise, huh?) and Allison's is Belle. If not, sorry I am losing my mine I guess!

Where and when are we going to meet to hand out the badges and meet everyone the first day? Maybe right before or during the deck party? I don't know if anyone has set a time, but I was just curious to see if anyone had a plan yet!

No need to be an alcohol drinker - or to bring alcohol! Quite a few of the participants don't imbibe, so feel free to bring sparkling cider, juice or any unusual beverage that tickles your fancy. We're buying our wine in Barcelona - but we're also staying there a few days in advance. They have a really good wine shop (or two).

Sweet Sue

We are staying at the Las Ramblas Hotel. I've never stayed there before but I know the area and it's a good location. I booked it through Octopus.com and paid about $175 for a room for 2 with hot breakfast. Hope that helps.

We did the same ;) Oh and Peter, this is where you are at too :goodvibes

There you have it!

Thanks you 2!

Peter

Jenn is not a real drinker, and I dont drink!

But boy, can she talk!!

Sue - did you make the Palo Res, for 4 people like we talked about LOL

Smileys are not working!!!

Love Ya!!
is that 5 posts ? LOL
Peter

The only problem is - Christina can't go and she would KILL me if I booked dinner with you two - without her!

On another note, I could see about getting that private room for a Palo's dinner. Anyone interested?

Sue,

Kelly and I are both b2bers so we'll be on the ship. Just let us know when and where and we'll be there!

It sounds like you're getting a great price on your private tour in Rome. Will they meet you at the ship?

Your ski trip sounds great. Was it Christina's first time?

Count us in if you arrange for the private dining room at Palo.

Kathy

I must be asleep. Messed up the editing and posted twice instead. The posting on hotels is listed below. It's the correct one. GEESH!

Sue

We will probably do mostly walking, but it wouldn't hurt to be near the Metro. We will be there for both daytime and evening. We want to visit musems, architurce, and shop. Moderate is under $200.

Have you heard anything (good or bad) about the hotels that Disney is helping people book with? Thanks for all the help.

*** Edited to correct the name of the hotel in the Gothic Quarter. All is fixed now! ***

DCL Hotels - $$$$$$ (as in sticker shock). The good news - if you want to book excursions they pick you up at the hotel. You can also book DCL transfers from their hotel to the port. Anywhere else you are on your own since DCL only offers airport transfers to the rest of us! The hotels they chose are generally of high quality but they are not in the tourist area from what I remember the last time I looked. I think AC Barcelona is one of their choices. It's going for 125 Euro/night right now on the Barcelona website. I think DCL charged about twice that.

If you're new to Europe, booking is a bit different. Double means two people, not necessarily two beds or a double bed. The bedding will vary (it might be two twins or one queen for example). You'll need to look at the description. I like barcelona.com for showing the hotels with pictures and room descriptions. They also have user ratings which can be very helpful when choosing.

Here are some choices. I've also included the Las Ramblas hotel. This hotel is now going for well over the $175 booked by the group.

Petit Palace Opera Garden Ramblas is running about 165 Euros which is a bit over your budget, but it's right next to the La Boqueria Market, the biggest market around! It's also closer to the main shopping district which is in L'Eixample (north of the Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas). It gets a 7.3. I included it because it is one of the few hotels that has triple rooms if you have more people.

NH Duc de la Victoria is in the heart of the Gothic Quarter between the cathedral (the gothic quarter one, not La Sagrada Familia) and Las Ramblas. The price is decent and it has excellent reviews (average 8.2). It's 140 euros (< $200). Another review here.

The Ambassador hotel is relatively inexpensive located about two blocks from Las Ramblas. It's only 10 years old, so the hotel doesn't have as much "atmosphere" as some of the older sites, but the price break might be worth it. It is 154 euros and gets a 7.4.

For a two-star, less expensive alternative. Try Hostal Mare Nostrum. It's right by the Metro and is a budget-conscious choice (relatively speaking - it's still $100/night). It gets a 7.1 at 75 euros.

Husa Oriente is just a tad over your budget at $160 euros but you might be able to shop around for a cheaper amount. It's right next to the Metro. It gets a 7.1.

Here is the Ramblas Hotel where the others are staying. It's at 166 euros. It's just a bit south of Plaza Real which has tons of restaurants and partying opportunities. It gets a 7.3

There are more economical options if you stay in L'Eixample which is a more up-to-date area north of the Gothic Quarter. It begins at Playa Catalunya (the north end of Las Ramblas). It is further from the port though (Las Ramblas is about a mile long).

I hope these help at least give you some idea of where to go. Prices aren't actually all that bad even though they may seem it!

If you have to stick to your budget, I would recommend the NH Duc de la Victoria. If you have a bit more to spend, I'd consider staying with the others in the Ramblas Hotel. It's nearer the port (further south) but it's not actually in the Gothic Quarter, so it's not as "steamy" at night.

Another note - rooms are not truly "soundproof" no matter what they say. If you do stay on Las Ramblas and are a go-to-bed early type, ask for a quiet room. It won't face Las Ramblas, but you'll get a better night's sleep.

Whew! And that's all the free advice I have for this morning! :-)

Sweet Sue

*** Edited to add additional review for NH Duc de la Victoria ***

Sounds great! I think there's a funicular directly from the port out to Montjuic, but I don't know where that ends up in relation to the fountains. I'll see what info I can figure out and we'll go from there.

Yes - Stefano picks us up at the port. I was happily surprised at the price. It sometimes helps to have a TA that's been there before!

Does anyone have preferences on bookings for dinner. I was thinking we could try Sardinia day since that is a relatively early night and it wouldn't wreck anyone's personal plans for a romantic at-sea Palo dinner. Thoughts??? I'd probably book at 8 just to make sure we're inside for sunset.

Sue

Did you still want the names of our favorite characters? We're a little unconventional, but here goes.

Savannah's is Lightning McQueen
Carter's is Jack Sparrow
Todd likes Kida (from Atlantis)
My favorite is the flamingo with the yo yo from Fantasia

I'm still working on air. Access back to Detroit is not good time wise. I had to :rotfl2: at the flights that went into Heathrow and then next leg went out of Gatwick.

I have to do something soon or DCL will be taking care of my air.

Good Morning- Welcome to another day closer to the cruise!! :lmao:

Sorry, it's the flipping nights to days thing- it's really weird being up all night:confused3 I sit her watching my husband sleep....

Hey, who else is going to be at JKF on the 24th?

Peter, I'm getting in at 5:35 pm and I will be getting on a flight to Madrid at 9pm something. I am really tempted to take a cab into the city and go to dinner with my brother or go shopping. Well, maybe I shouldn't go shopping since I already will have too much luggage. I haven't even packed and I know this.

I am listening to the Disboards podcast and I just heard Disney might put a hotel in Chicago- despite what they say, I could totally go for a quick Disney fix on occassion. Oh Tracy- I see a road trip in the FAR future!!

I'm going to get back to research sleep studies for my class project....I can feel everyone's jealousy!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Hi and Welcome!!

I sent LegalBriefs a PM requesting the addition of myself and group - since I didn't see an answer I will try your system...We would all like to be added to the Roy Suite tour as well.

Cayla (46)
Stacey (29+ - she refuses to grow up!)
Barbara (29+ - she stopped counting!)
Bev (29+ - she also stopped counting!!)

This is my 7th DCL trip, Stacey & Barbara 10 ea and Bev's FIRST!! we want to show her the Disney way!!

So sorry.... :-( I have been a little busy at work, :surfweb: and have not had much of a chance to log on here... I did not mean to ignore amyone... :confused3
