I should have asked this a long time ago. My parents in law are coming to Disney with us this year, it's their first time. My FIL had a massive stroke several years ago affecting him physically. He has some motor functions in the upper and lower extremities but I would almost diagnosis him as a quadriplegic. He uses a Quantum electric chair for his daily life and transfers with his wife with what we in the physical therapy field call a Max assist meaning he contributes maybe less than 25% of the effort. I saw the list that compiled the rides he can go on with his chair but that was pretty much the show attractions. My question is we cast members allow his wife to Max tranfer him onto some slower rides....I think I read haunted mansion was one but what are the others? We will be going to MK, AK and Epcot. We leave tomorrow so hoping to have some quick replies. Thank you:)

Cm are not permitted to assist with transfers. So someone in your party would have to do the tea sfer

That shouldn't be a problem, his wife does it daily and I'm a therapist, I just wasn't sure if there was any liabilities where Disney would say no it's not safe if they have to be fully transferred into the ride.

Have you looked at the FAQ sticky here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/di...disabled-1st-trip-next-trip-wish-trip.595713/

Particularly post 11 and posts 18-20. There are some rides in each park that have wheelchair vehicles like IASW, TSM, the Jungle Cruise, Kilimanjaro Safari, and Ellen's Energy Adventure. I'm sure there are others. But because power chairs are larger than manual ones, he might have to transfer to a manual chair to access these. There are other rides where the chair can be brought up to the ride vehicle and you could do an assist transfer. But this requires a ride stoppage for rides like Haunted Mansion or Spaceship Earth. You would have to look at photos of the ride vehicles to see if you would be able to transfer your Dad. Sometimes the openings are very narrow. Some rides have a HA vehicle with a wide door.

That is great info minnie mum, when I read that he has to transfer into a manual w/c is that something they may have at the attraction or do people bring a long a manual w/c (I can't see that happening)?

they have a manual wheel chair at the attraction if that is what is needed

An actual power wheelchair will fit on all the attractions that a manual wheelchair will fit on.
ECVs won't fit on many of those because they are too large and don't turn sharply enough.

So, in general, a power wheelchair can go on almost anything a manual wheelchair can. There is one I can think of offhand where it can't go on - Ellen's Energy Adventure.

The manual wheelchairs at the attraction are not something he could probably transfer to. They have armrests that don't lift and footrests that cold up, but don't switch my away. That makes it hard to transfer unless the person can stand.

As Minnie mum mentioned, posts 18-21 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread is about transfers. Some would probably be relatively easy to transfer to. Others - like Pirates - would be almost impossible.

My daughter has cerebral palsy and is a mixed type, mostly spastic quad with some athetoid and dystonic movements. At her very best, she can do a stand and pivot. At her worst, she is a total lift. She has been on most of the WDW rides except the mountains. Her small size and weight (5 feet tall and 80 pounds) make it relatively easy to lift her onto most things.

If you have any questions about specific attractions, please feel free to ask.
