My DH and I are buying a new King mattress.
Havent shopped for a mattress in 12 years.
Anyone have good/bad stories to tell?
Looking for a good place to buy one and not overpay.
Looking at a King with memory foam.

Thanks for any help!

totally in love the W Hotel mattress. you can find a code. We bought ours for 40% off and I still love it, as does my husband and son. it is so unbelievably comfortable and we paid less than $1,000 for a king

I have a Sleep Number bed and have had it for 16 years. It is the same as when we bought it. Last weekend I had to buy DS#4 a bed for his off campus apartment. One thing that was evident to me; it is IMPOSSIBLE to know the true cost of a bed set. I made the mistake of going with DS#1, "who has a friend who works there who would give him a good deal". Yeah right.
I find it impossible to negotiate with him around so he loved the bed. They "threw in sheets, two pillows and bed frame and delivery for 'only $465.00 because its a total package" So okay, we buy the bed. I went home and decided that I didn't need pillows, sheets and a mattress pad, so I bundled it up the next morning, took it back without DS and said, "I don't need anymore stuff. I need a bed and I am not going to pay more than $300 for it". They took back the stuff and they delivered the bed for $317 tax included.

I'm a big fan of Original Mattress Factory, if you have one. The prices are extremely reasonable, and the mattresses are double sided (very few are anymore). We paid about half of what I priced elsewhere, and the quality is terrific. You can customize if you want. We added (at no charge) supports along the outside of the bed so that it stays good and firm when you sit on the side.

you always have to take a nice bouncing leap onto the bed.

I would think going with a memory foam topper would allow the mattress to last longer. Because you can replace the worn foam. My aunt did that, and her bed is ages old. Of course she can get any foam she wants to fit her needs.

We just went shopping for a new one too. Went close to memorial day, which gave some added savings.

My aunt wanted to spend little as possible, and i wanted something soft and squishy as possible. Since i might be the most frequent user of the bed, well at least the first. Shopped at a few stores, checked out department store. Found one alright mattress at mattress giant for 399 (full size). Final stop of the day was a mattress firm clearance store. Now she wasn't looking to purchase that day, since we had like 3 more days till moving in the house. But the guy showed us their brand mattress, said it was 450+ or something. My aunt said that Giant had a similar bed for 399. So the guy price matched, knocked an extra ten off and threw in free a bed frame (which was needed). My aunt bought it right there.

It's a pillow top, and it does have the outer rim spring to keep the sides from sagging. I didn't notice them sitting on the edge, but my aunt did. And you don't notice at all laying down. After getting it home, my aunt thought it was a great mattress and that i picked out a good one. I haven't had any complaints and love sleeping on it. Fits the bill as soft and squishy for me.

I would suggest shopping now, getting prices, and then buy on the july 4th weekend when all the stores will have a sale. And don't be afraid to price match on different brands, especially the store brand models. Each store will think theirs is the best in comparrison.

I hate to sound stupid but what is a double sided mattress? Don't all mattresses have two sides? Are you saying the newer ones from some places wouldn't be able to be flipped because the other side has something like wood in it? We have just started looking and I noticed a lot of mattresses say they never need to be flipped. I took that as you don't have to but you can if you want to (and I would want to). Now I am wondering if they say that because you can't flip them unless you want to lay on plywood. :scared1:

The pillow tops are one sided since the pillow top is only on one side...usually.

They can't be flipped. This means that they really have half the lifespan, although that's not what the salespeople say. I researched it when buying to figure out which salespeople I believed, and the Original Mattress Factory ones were the ones I believed.

DawnCt is right about the pillowtops, though. Only a few can be flipped (I believe the ones from OMF can). I didn't want a pillowtop. If I did, I would have bought a separate one with a regular mattress.

Yuppers. We have OMF mattress, king size. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten the 2 twins with the thingy that goes in-between the 2 mattresses so that it appears to be one. They are HUGE and flipping is always an event at our house.:lmao:

DH and I bought a Select Comfort Bed (sleep number) a couple months ago. I have NEVER slept so good!! For years my back has hurt, but not since we got this bed! I will never buy another bed. We are even going to buy our kids sleep number beds.

if you want to flip, go with a topper. Unless it's double sided.

Since the bed we got is a guest bed, it won't used often enough to require flipping.
