Mattress help..... PLEASE!!!!!

DH and I just got a new mattress on Friday. Well.... it feels nothing like it did in the showroom. We have slept on it for 2 nights so far and it is much harder than the one we tried. The label is the same but I swear it's a different mattress. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Do you think it will get softer as the days/weeks/years go by? I know it's bad because DH never complains about this kind of stuff and he noticed right away. I'm not sure if I should call the company or not. HELP!!!!

I'm sorry, I can't help, I can just empathize. It happened to us too.

I hate mattresses. DH and I have been through 3 in the past 10 years and now sleep on one that bows about 5-6 inches down on each side where we lay cuz we don't want to shell out another thousand for a new one.

But hey, we are going to Disney World!!

We also have a Kingsdown, not a Gold Crown though...... we've had it for 4 years, and have been pleased with it since day 1.

However, there's nothing stopping you from contacting the store/manufacturer and see if you got a 'dud' bed.

We have a Select Comfort air bed. The best money we could have spent on a bed I think. One of us can be tossing and turning all night, and the other one doesn't even feel it. I know what you mean by it not feeling the same as in the store, our previous one we had was that way. It did finally "break in", but just never felt as good as the model.

My husband and I are sleeping on the same mattress and box springs that he had at home in high school. They are still ok to us.

Unless it is a pillow-top, you might want to consider getting a nice quality foam mattress pad. A firm mattress is actually good for the back! (You won't want one that is soft that will begin to sag....) My DS mattress is very hard/firm... But with the little foam mattress pad I put on it, it is the best sleeping mattess in the house!

I also have a Sleep Number bed by Select Comfort . We love it ! I would call the sore back and ask them to exchange it . I know that we would have done it . It wont hurt to ask . Have you ever tried a Sleep number bed? You have to try it

Mattress shopping is the worst! Can you return it? Some companies offer a 7 day sleep guarantee or something. I would give it as much time left as you have on the warranty and then return it if it's no good.

Although I agree that a mattress pad can help, they are really meant to protect your mattress, not to provide comfort. That's what the mattress should do in the first place.

We bought a Select Comfort bed yesterday actually (sleep # bed). It felt heavenly in the store. If you can return the bed you have, maybe look again at those?

I don't have any helpful hints, just sympathy!!! I need a new mattress and am afraid to buy one just for this reason. It's tough to spend roughly $1500-$2000 and have this happen. I was so afraid that I went and bought a "sleep number" bed. It felt great in the store. After 4 nights on it, and very little sleep, I sent it back. I hated that bed.

Just remember, the bed you tried in the store has been "tried out" every day, all day for months. The firmer, outer layer of the bed in the store is just more broken in. As long as the bed you got is firm and not sagging, I'm sure it will be okay eventually.

I think that the other poster had a good idea. See if you can find a foam or padded mattress cover that you can use for awhile to alleviate the firmness.

Just wanted to pipe back in here....

I was talking about the foam egg-shell or ribbed mattress topper, not just a fabric mattress cover. I would then put a nice fabric mattress cover over the mattress and the foam topper.

While I know it seems really wierd to get a brand new mattress and end up putting one of these on it, I have to say that DS bed really is GREAT! And I have heard of others who do the same thing.... A firm mattress is the BEST... Unfortunatley not all of them offer enough of that foam comfort on top.... And a good thing about using the foam topper is that where the pillow top on a firm mattress will give out in a relatively short amout of time (and cannot be replaced)... a foam mattress topper can be easily replaced!

Whatever you do, make sure that if you do need to return your mattress that you do it before the trial-period runs out!!!

Do call TODAY and make sure that they know that you are not sure if you are happy with your new mattress....

According to the store, it should feel a lot like it does in the showroom but he said to give it another few days. There is actually a 60 day guarantee. That's good I guess... we are actually thinking of upgrading to a king.

You know I was thinking about buying a new mattress (it's been 8 years), but I am hesitant to spend the money and I have no idea what's the best to buy. I want something that will last and give both DH & I good nights sleep (we're both on the heavy side). I've heard good things about the sleep number bed, but it's just air right? Couldn't it leak? Is there an inner spring out there that is really good? Don't those foam things break down?

I know, I know...so many questions, but it is an investment. Of course I really need to get a bed frame too!

I have a Kingsdown with pillow top. We have had them exchange in several times as it develops a valley where we each sleep with a huge ridge in the middle.

My suggestion is to return the mattress if you can for another. Do not let it go past the trial period as it will be nothing but a fight for you. BTW, where did you buy it?

Another option may be to see if the floor model is for sale (I know this option is not for everyone). I bought my mattress 3 years ago this way. It was pre broken in for us. We got it from a small mattress store, so it had not been overly abused. It is as comfortable today as it was the day we got it, and it cost us probably half as much.

We bought a Select comfort bed a few years ago, and just love it! The only thing I would suggest has already been said. I would call and see if there is something they can do. Matresses are too expensive to try and "wait" for it to wear down!

If I remember my 'bed consultant' correctly- she said that Kingsdown has a lifetime warranty.
