Matterhorn & Indy

Who ever said that Space has any steep drops? Actually it has only one very small drop, about 12' and not steep. The rest of the ride is essentially flat. BTMRR has far more drops and steeper and jerkier! Space is a ton of fun and the sound and special effects are what make this ride a not to miss one. Space does make you feel you're going faster than you really are by use of lighting and somewhat tight turns rather than any drops.

One woman in our group was deathly afraid of any scary rides especially coasters. She hated BTMRR as it was too steep and too many ups and downs and she didn't have fun on it at all. However, she loved Space. She was terrified on the way up the long initial series of climbs. I kept assuring her that at the top of the lift there is no drop like typical coasters. It just turns and begins to pick up a bit of speed. I think the top speed is around 30mph with average of only 20mph which is about the same as BTMRR. For comparison, California Scream'n is about 50mph.

There is one main thing about Space Mountain that I don't like. It is in the dark and I like to see where I am when I die.:lmao:

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Right there with you! Sad thing is I loved it as a kid. Now, the feeling of falling gets me. Still, might try it this time around. may have finally talked myself on to the Matterhorn....maybe.

It took me probably 20 visits to ride Space at DL because the one at WDW just seemed to beat me up and I thought it would be the same. The one at DL is much smoother.

I found that asking for row 5 makes the ride much easier to handle (cm's are so used to people asking for row 1, that asking for row 5 makes them laugh). I can still see enough of the "train" in front of me, that I can handle it much better (by knowing which way it will turn next).

This past trip they put us in row 1 for one of the rides on it and I decided to suck it up and do it. HATED it! Had to buy the picture because you can tell I was terrified (and I had been on it in the middle/back sections a few times by this point).

Also, row one of BTMMR is BORING to me (this is another ride it took me years to built up to riding). It makes the ride seem so slow. I thought we were breaking down a couple of times because until the last few cars get their momentum going, it's super slow. If you don't want that fast feeling, ask for row 1, 2 or 3 on that one.

Maybe I'll try sitting in row 5 at Space Mountain. I love BTMMR and Matterhorn. I find most of Splash Mountain boring, (except the end of course).

so - yeah - I'm another scaredy person who has visited the parks and just looked at things and freaked out!
So Indy - I prefer sitting in the centre - I feel more secure, a miniscule less movement from all the jerking, and less feeling of falling out the sides! :thumbsup2

then on my last trip I discovered BTMR - no freefalling drops!! speed, turns, banking, jerking etc Now a favourite! all fine for me but I can't take free fall drops.
absolutely hated Goofy's Barnstormer :scared1::sick:- it couldn't end fast enough - too much freefalling.
POTC drops are small enough to get by.
DH reckons I will hate Splash.

Also - rides with trains/carriages will lessen any effects as they get disappated through all the carriages, as opposed to single units (such as a SM log) that's all the physics I know :teacher:

From what you all write looks like Matterhorn may be worth a try AND (and it's a BIG AND) what about Space? are you saying it is more like BTMR?? or is like Goofy: full of free falls??:confused3

thanks

I haven't been on Goofy's, but Space I love and there are no free falls, I can remember. It's just twisty turny. As is the Matterhorn. There's one little drop at the end, but it's small and I never get the falling feeling. You just drop a little and then splash into the water.

I am a thrill ride person. I love the TOT and Mullholland Madness. The scariest ride for me at DLR is the Mickey's Fun Wheel, the swinging gondolas. Although I am looking for someone to ride it with me because I want to try it again. I just don't want to go alone, and wild horses couldn't get DH on it. :upsidedow

Indy it's really scary. I don't like the snake part, you can see it coming as you round the corner, so just close your eyes for that one, the rest of it is fine. I think "Indy" acutally says "Snakes? You're on your own for this one." or something like that when you're coming to that part. Dinosaur freaks me out. I will go on it, but my eyes are closed most of the time and I am holding on to DH with a death grip. No frickin way would I sit any where but in the middle of seat on that ride. I couldn't even tell you what color the big scary dinosaur is and I have been on it three times.

Space is certainly not like BTMRR as the latter has quite a few ups and down. Space is almost entirely flat. It has one small 12 foot drop about 1/2 way through the ride.

While it is dark, it is not pitch black. The entire ride is an immersion into special effects involving lights and music. The ride does bank right and left several times which gives the illusion of higher speeds than actual. Top speed on space is no higher than on BTMRR and no drops other than a very quick short barely noticiable one.

thanks everyone - your encouragement is giving me courage! sort of!:scared:

oh - yes - the swinging gondolas on the Fun Wheel  no thanks
