(84 - 26) - 40 - (16 - 23) = 25

96 - (10 - 29 - 2) = 117

DS is working with substrcting negative numbers. It's been awhile since I worked with negative numbers. I just wanted to confirm that the above problems are correct. Now to try to explain it to DS.

I won't tell you here, but at least one answer is wrong. You have two options to do the problem:

1. Do everything in the ( ) first then perform the operation in front of the ( )

2. Change the signs of the numbers where indicated THROUGH the ( ).

For example if you have

5 - (3 - 2) =

By using the first way you would have

5 - (1) = 4

By the second way you'd have

5 - 3 + 2 = 4

Hope this helps!

I have the same answers as the op. Which one do you feel is incorrect?

I got the same answers as the op. I also put the problems in Excel and got the same answers.

Put the problem in my TI-86 cacualtor and got the same answers that you did.

Please don't rely on machines, this is something you need to do pencil and paper. Does Excel truly take notice of the negative number?

Thanks everyone. I was relying on the use of my paper, pencil and an old memory.;)

I got a different answer for number one.. I may have written a digit wrong.

I'll check it and come back.

I got the same as the OP as well...... can someone explain which one is wrong and why??

I got the same answers using a graphing calculator AND pencil/paper. Will someone who's getting different answers please explain. Maybe I'm forgetting something about negatives (it HAS been awhile).
