can anyone help me and my son out, this one has us stumped!!!

If 5+5=10 and 10x10=100 how come 100-10 doesn't equal 24?

Thanks!

I must be a bit thick - that makes absolutely no sense to me. But math isn't my strong suit.......

Good luck!

Jen

Ummm. Because it doesn't? I've tried to read between the lines here, since there is obviously more to this problem than you've told us, but I can't figure out at all where you are coming from.

It doesn't equal 24 because you are too busy doing your math problems and don't have time to watch the TV show.

My son said it is a trick question, I have no clue, he said it is correct.........

Maybe you are putting to much thought into it. Maybe the answer is 100-10=90?

Your son is right, the statement is correct, 5+5=10 and 10x10=100 and 100-10 doesn't equal 24.
That's the question it doesn't equal 24 it equals 90.
I'm guessing...but in my head it sounds logical! And all the other voices in my head agree with me!!

Because you could translate it:

x+x=y or 2x=y

y times y = z or y squared=z

so z-y= ??

substitute y squared for z you have y (squared)-y=????
this factors to y(y-1).

If you put the numbers into it:
5+5=10 or 2(5)=10
10x10=100 or 10 (sq)=100
100-10= 10(10-1)=10x9=90
