Math help needed, thanks!

The twins have this problem on their math paper and we can't figure it out:

All the seats in the theater are divided into 8 groups. There are 40 seats in each group. Write and solve a division equation to find how many seats there are in the theater.

I am thinking that the word division is wrong but maybe someone here knows the answer?

Isn't it

x/8 = 40

and to solve for x

x/8 * 8 = 40*8

x = 320

Our schools make such a stink about showing your work. It would be so much easier to just do the problem in so many cases. Math drives me crazy.

They are probably trying to illustrate the relationship between multiplication and division. Essentially you can find the answer using either operation. It becomes much more important in higher levels of algebra and calculus.

But it only confuses us moms who don't remember all that stuff from school ! DH is the math wiz at our house and I am sure is laughing at the e-mail I sent him. You are much quicker at responding, thanks again!
