Hi! For this game I'm going to give you a math question, and the first person to answer correctly gets a prize :goodvibes

Example:

If the question was 5x5,
the next poster would respond 25.

First question,

89x5/5x(89+6)=

The prize for this question is a Casey Jr. Pin :p

.93684

(It's going to be irrational, so there's no point in carrying the decimal out too far ;) ).

0.93684212

or....unrounded version of cardinals answer XD

Miscalculation, Card got it, sorry -_-

Next question:

If I have 10 quarts of water, how many pints is this?

(1 quart equals 2 pints)

Prize for this round:

Alice in Wonderland Quest Pin

I would like to know what arithmetics priority rules you are using because I am surprise by your response ..

Yes, I agree with Kasiks.

First question,

89x5/5x(89+6)=

By following order of operations:

89x5/5x(89+6)= 89x5/5x95

Next, nothing is in parentheses, so everything is done in order.

89x5= 445

445/5= 89

89x95= 8,455

Even though order of operations says multiplication THEN division, if you have only multiplication and division in a problem, you just do them in order, regardless which operation it is. Same goes for addition and subtraction.

:confused3 Sorry, don't mean to be nitpicky. I think this is a good idea for a game. I was just checking.

Yeah, I agree with Kasiks and Mnementh. According to the order of operations, the answer you accepted is wrong. I sat here trying to figure out how I got it wrong. I'm glad to see that others spoke up because I'd start thinking I'm teaching my students the wrong thing ... hehe. Remember, PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally).

However, I see what you meant when you typed the initial question. The answer you accepted shows that you're using the / sign as a fraction line instead of division. I think CowboyErin meant to write 89x5 was the numerator of the fraction and 5x(89+6) was the denominator. But when you write it out straight across like that, the / is in place of the division sign.

Hmmm... I thought that slash was to be interpreted as a fraction bar. That's the way it's usually done on the internet, anyway.

It looks like Kasiks' head is a little too big for his body ;)

I am a girl and not a boy .. If the topic starter wants to do a topic about mathematics, I think it is important to do it with rigor even if it is for the fun ... the question was not well written and that is all .. because if you write a program and give it the calculus the way it was written it will give you the result I said.
