Mass shooting at Fort Hood- Killeen

From the get-go, I said something about this to DH. I said it seemed strange that an officer who was making a decent salary and living in a city with a low cost of living, would choose to live in an obviously low-rent apartment complex. That place was clearly cheap, cheap, cheap. He didn't have med school student loans, since the US government paid for his education, so his money wasn't going to pay back loans. His parents were dead, so he wasn't supporting them. He had no wife or children to support. Yes, maybe he gave money to relatives, but we haven't heard about that and if he was making $90,000, he could afford to help out relatives and still live in an apartment a little less bare bones than that one. So I had to ask......Where was all his money going? :confused3

It didn't take much of a leap to wonder if he'd made some contributions to some less than patriotic causes. Patriotic to the US, that is. I guess that possibility will be checked out now..........[/QUOTE

well, he did spend money on strippers before he killed 14 people

I read in a magazine in a waiting room today (I think it was People) that the killer was encouraging his patients (many who suffered from PTSD) to convert to Islam. Who said this man didn't have an agenda?

I read that too. :( Why is it Congress was encouraged to wait to investigate? I think it had something to do with trying to keep it from being political. I would like to know what good waiting is going to do. The facts will remain the facts.

I get steamed just thinking about it.

The idea is that you don't want the Congressional investigation to interfere with the criminal investigation and prosecution. Like when Oliver North's conviction for the Iran-Contra affair were overturned, not because he was not in fact guilty, but because some of the evidence used against him may have been derived from his testimony in Congressional investigations. The first priority is to nail Hasan.

That's not the idea. The idea is to keep our troops safe from this happening again. We have to know our enemy and keeping our head in the sand and delaying investigations won't cut it.

Senate Panel to Investigate Ft. Hood Massacre

The Senate Homeland Security Committee will conduct an investigation into last week's shootings at Fort Hood, beginning with a public hearing next week, the committee's leaders announced Monday.

While the investigation will not interfere with the Army or FBI's criminal investigations, "this murderous attack should be examined from every angle to make sure nothing like this occurs again," Committee Chairman Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said in a statement.

The committee will investigate the potential motives of Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the man accused of opening fire at the military base. It will also look into whether the government missed warning signs of the incident and what lessons can be gleaned from the tragedy to prevent such future attacks.

"As this investigation continues, we would do no favor to the thousands of Muslim Americans who are serving our military with honor and the millions of patriotic and law-abiding Muslim Americans by ignoring real evidence that an individual Muslim American soldier may have become a violent Islamist extremist," Lieberman said.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), the ranking Republican on the committee, said Congress owed the investigation to the military, their families and their communities.
"Our military must be prepared to detect the warning signs for potential violence and to intervene and prevent similar attacks in the future," she said. "This hearing is vital to assuring the men and women serving in our military and their families that their safety is a top priority for us."

How about repealing the 1993 ban on allowing soldiers to carry fire arms on base?
That would be a good start.
Maybe they would not have to wait for a civilian police officer to show up with a gun.

You asked for an explanation of why Congress would be asked to delay the investigation and I gave it. It doesn't mean that the criminal investigation and the other investigations that don't involve public testimony or grants of immunity don't continue.

Your explanation was one of many potential explanations. Keeping it out of the "political theater" can mean a variety things.
