Hi everyone! I'm new to the boards, and am planning my son's Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World! I hope this is the right place to post this. I have been very inspired by all of the trip reports I have seen on here, and decided to stop lurking, join, and make one of my own. :) I'm kind of a lengthy speaker, but hopefully no one minds!

When I found out Mason going to have a wish, I had known all along that he would want to go to Disney World. I have been casually perusing threads for ideas since then. I have never been to Disney before in my life, and I don't know many people who have. I had no idea what to plan for, what theme parks have what rides, etc. I still don't have a very good idea, but I think I'm a little more prepared because of this board.

Mason went to declare his wish on Tuesday, and we were told that we would most likely be able to go as soon as we wanted--within a couple days, if we wanted to. Mason has just finished the main course of treatments, and is now in the middle of the only three week break he will get from treatments before maintenance begins. Now is actually the best time to go, unless we want to wait until January of 2012 (when maintenance is done), or do a lot of schedule juggling to get a week without doctor appointments. I gave them three different dates, and nothing is official yet, but they are really pushing for sometime around the 1st of Feb., since it's the best time in his schedule.

And now I'm a little nervous that I've shot myself in the foot, and won't be prepared enough. If we do end up going so soon, I'll have about a week to prepare...maybe less. I've always been flexible for trips, and could pack with a few hours notice and be ready to go, but I know this is different. I've never been there before, and have NO idea what to expect! So here is my little thread, where I'll begin planning and putting ideas together...and maybe (hopefully?) receive some help from those who have gone before. :)

So who's going on this trip?

Here is my sweet boy, and the lucky wish recipient, Mason, age 4. I wrote more about him in the next post, in case you are curious.

Mason's cousin Moses, age 6, coming as Mason's chosen "play mate" (because Mason is an only child):

Mason's auntie Latu, coming as helper extraordinaire (because I NEED her help!):

Mason's story
Our current trip itinerary

We're so excited to share Mason's trip with you!!

I have just heard back from MAW, and the dates for Mason's trip are:

March 22nd - 28th!

We are SO excited! I was doing some "planning" before today, but I have to admit that there wasn't much I could do until I knew the dates we would be going. Now I can work with park opening/closing times, dinner reservations, and can figure out exactly what to pack. :)

So far, my official plans consist of this:

March 22nd:
Arrive

March 23rd:
Magic Kingdom @ opening (9:00)
Break around Noon
Dinner at Chef Mickey's @ 8:35 PM

March 24:
?

March 25:
?

March 26th:
?

March 27th:
?

March 28th:
Depart

...I'm a complete Disney newbie! But I'm working on the plans, and will update them when I have more figured out.

Until then, I thought I would post a little of Mason's story, so you can get to know him.

1-2-2.jpg

Mason was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (an aggressive brain tumor) on November 3rd of 2010, just before his 4th birthday. My heart was broken as Mason was given a grim diagnosis, and went in for surgery early the next morning. It was a long surgery; around 10 hours. I had no idea what to expect, and so I prepared myself for the worst. But when the neurosurgeon came out, he had the greatest news I could imagine: the tumor (which was defined as "huge") had grown in such a way, that it had pushed Mason's brain open, allowing the surgeons to get deeper than they ever could have, to remove the tumor. They were able to get 95% of it out! I was shaken, shocked, and overjoyed. My son, I was told, would be just fine.

About a week later, Mason was taken into surgery a second time to remove more of the tumor; an operation that would need to be performed from another part of his head. That 5% of tumor that was left was still enough to keep him firmly in the "high risk" category. This surgery was successful as well, and Mason went on to amaze and awe, with a speedy recovery. We witnessed many, many, miracles in those weeks in the hospital, and got to see firsthand, the amazing strength and resiliency of a child.

Mason has since gone through all of his required radiation treatments, and the first part of his chemotherapy. He is currently in the middle of a 4-week break between his first part of chemotherapy, and maintenance, which he begins on the 21st of this month.

Mason loves Thomas the Tank Engine, Mickey Mouse, and Buzz Lightyear--in that order. He loves his family dearly, and he loves his friends...and when he loves, he loves fiercely. He considers everyone he meets and every toy he plays with, his close friends. On the flip side, he also likes to get into trouble and make mischief. He likes to see how things work, and how to make things--including people--work. :)

Anyways, I'm excited to go to Disney with this little guy, and can't wait to get some more planning done!

Welcome!! Your son is absolutely adorable! My son had an enormous tumor (football sized and just over 3 pounds!) on his kidney and has also been through radiation and chemo. He is doing great and finished chemo last January. These kids are so amazing at how well they bounce back from surgery and everything else that they have to go through. Will you all be staying at Give Kids the World? This board is amazing and full of information :) I just checked out the Unofficial Guide to Disney World from the library and it's been great in helping me know what parks have what rides, and if my kids are tall enough for them. Have fun planning!

SO Happy Mason has gotten a Wish and that his cousin and Aunt will be joining you. :yay::banana::yay: You are going to have such a FUN time and your trip will be here before you know it. Mason is adorable!!!

Ask lots of questions if you want...I would post them on the Wish Trippers Thread (Where I found you) :goodvibes because that is where LOTS of people with experience will be lurking, waiting to answer when they can.

Congratulations and :welcome:WELCOME :welcome:to the DIS!!!:jumping1::rainbow:party::rainbow::jumping1:

:welcome: and thanks for joining us here. You can learn a lot of great tips from expereinced people! Your story is amazing and I'm glad your little guy is doing so well after such a scary time. It is amazing how kids will bounce back!:jumping2: I look forward to hearing more of your story and follow along in the magic....:yay::yay::yay:

Your son is adorable, i'm so happy to hear he is doing so well - all things considered. So exciting about your upcoming trip, have fun with the planning!! :cool1:

Football sized?!! Wow. I can't even imagine. I'm so glad he's doing well, and has finished his treatments. Tough guy!

I believe we'll be staying at GTKTW. They mentioned it a few times, but I haven't heard back from the trip coordinator, except to hear our dates. I should hear back from her soon, with more info. And thanks for the tip about the Unofficial Guide to Disney World. I hadn't even thought about that! It's checked out at my library, but I just put it on reserve and hope to read it soon!

Thank you! We feel very blessed to be able to have them come along. Mason LOVES them both! :) I'll be sure and ask all my questions. This board has been so helpful already, in answering so many of my questions. And when I discovered the Wish Trippers thread, it was like heaven! Almost everything I needed in one place! :lovestruc

Thank you!! It's been nice to have something for him to look forward to. It is seriously like night and day, anytime he talks about it.

:welcome: We are newbie's too! :welcome:

Looks like we are going to be at Disney at the same time!!! Our flight arrives in Florida on the 23rd and we depart on the 29th! Hopefully we will see each other around GKTW!

I know our trip was planned so quickly and I am nervous but this site too has helped ALOT!!!

Your son is just the cutest! Hope to stay in touch!

Smiles!

Hi Penelope!! Mason is SUCH a cutie! I am SO glad they were able to get most of the tumor. I have been toWDW several times and can help in ANY way! If you have a question, drop me a PM, or ask me here, if you want! I love helping people plan their trips.

I have never been to GKTW, but I hear the most amazing things about it! You will love it there!

Character Meals are a great way to see the characters without waiting forever in lines!

We just got back Thursday from GKTW and we had the most amazing time. My boys are a bit older BUT your son and his cousin will have a blast. Glad your aunt is coming to help. My mom came with me.

We did 2 character meals - Jake is 17 and all he wanted was a date with the princesses - so we had breakfast at in Norway in Epcot at The Storybook Princess Breakfast at Restaurant Akershus and then we did dinner at Crystal Palace at MK so we had a great view of wishes right from our window seat

If you have any questions just ask. This was our third trip to Disney in 3 years BUT this one as so different and the treatment -- WOW

I apologize for the disappearing act! I totally stressed myself out while trying to plan this trip, and had to take a break for a while. I'm taking things one step at a time now, and am doing MUCH better planning without getting stressed. Also, I got The Unofficial Guide in the mail, and it has made life 10x easier. *phew*

Here are some quick updates:

Mason had a little downturn because of a problem with his vocal cords (one isn't working, and the other one is weak), so he wasn't eating much and lost a lot of weight. He had a feeding tube put in, and is now back to a healthy weight, and doing just fine. He has had test after test for his vocal cords, though, and they still aren't sure how they are going to treat the problem. They think they might just have to leave it until his chemo treatments are done, and just teach him how to swallow safely. He has another test next week, and we'll know more then.

Other than that, he is doing fantastic! He just had his first post-radiation MRI, and the tumor is gone! I can't tell you how happy that news makes me! Now, they are just treating him with chemotherapy alone, which will hopefully make sure that it won't come back. Except for a little nausea, he's responding very well to these treatments. Overall, everything is looking great, and Mason feels great! :cheer2:

I'm going to be posting a few updates, and responding to comments, so you may see quite a few posts from me in the next little bit.

Thanks for reading along!

Thank you! He is such a sweetie, isn't he? I am hearing amazing things about it, as well. I'm not sure if we will be staying there yet (they mentioned it when we were signing papers, but haven't said anything about it since then), but I really hope we are! It just sounds way too cool. Lol.

Thanks for the tip about the character meals! I made reservations for Chef Mickey's for our second day, which I know the kids will love!

Thanks so much for stopping by and reading!

Oh, I'm so excited! I'm going to go read Jake's TR as soon as I finish my update. They're always so fun! Plus, I'm curious to see what it's like, since I haven't been there yet.

I do have a question for you: how did you like the dinner at Crystal Palace? I was thinking of making lunch reservations for lunch at CP, on our second day at MK (which is a half-day). Would you say it's worth the time?

Thanks for your comment! I can't wait to read more about your trip. :)

We still aren't planning to visit Epcot, or Universal Studios. They have lots of attractions that appeal to me, but not enough (or the right kinds) for the kids to make spending our time there worthwhile. Plus, I'm not really a ride person (blasphemy, I know). :scared1:

I am still here praying for you. Please try to NOT stress, ask lots of questions and try to enjoy the planning and time leading up to your magical journey!! :yay::yay:Praying Mason feels good! :flower3:

Sorry to hear about his nausea after chemo, does he have a prescription for Zofran? I gave it to Elliot for at least 24 hours following chemo and it really helped (they also gave some in his port prior to chemo).

I think your plans look great!!! It's a shame we will be barely missing each other, we arrive on the 31st.

Wow it sounds like there is good news at your home! I hope he can get over the nausea and learn to eat! Your plans look great too!

Thank you! I'm definitely stress-free right now, and loving it!

Saying prayers for his vocal cords and :dance3: about the tumor being gone.

Thank you!! I feel like doing a dance, myself! The news is just so wonderful.

Aww, we'll miss each other by just a few days! What a shame! :sad2:

Mason has a prescription for Zofran and I had been giving it to him, but it wasn't enough for the first few days. I think that coupled with the fact that his belly was full every night from his feeds, his stomach just had a really hard time. We'll see what we can do this next time to prevent that, though.

Wow it sounds like there is good news at your home! I hope he can get over the nausea and learn to eat! Your plans look great too!

Thank you! I hope so, too. He doesn't eat a lot these days. He doesn't like the way it feels doing down. :sad1:
