Masks at HHI in June

We went to Disneyworld in October and found masks quite difficult to wear at times in humid weather constantly outdoors. That said we just got back from HHI and didn’t find masks nearly as much an issue. There were many places apart from people to take mask breaks or at pools or the beach. Plus there are many close places outside of the resort where it’s up to the family to decide when to wear masks. In this Covid environment I’d much rather visit HHI than DW. Also maybe we were unlucky but we found lines at DW worse than ever without benefit of fast passes but HHI on the other hand was very relaxing.

And yet this very thread is exactly that by its very title and it is allowed to stand.
Making a prediction about whether masks will still be a thing this summer is very different than debating them. That is NOT what I intended when creating this thread, and there is nothing in my title that calls for a debate.

OK. Since you said that. Why would you think anyone here would know the answer to your question? Not intended as confrontational at all. Serious question.

Even if somebody did, it would be somebody that couldn't tell you the answer. My point is that there was absolutely nowhere for this thread to go beyond someone guessing "yes" or "no," but you must have already known that, so why throw it out there at all? Virtually every "mask" thread on here turns into a debate of some kind. What answer were you expecting?

Uh, I was curious what other people thought. What harm is there in that??? I like to hear others' viewpoints because sometimes it makes me think about things I haven't already thought of. Sorry for offending you by starting a thread like that.

Well - I live in S.C. and will be at HHI end of May - my guess is - YES - masks will still be required when not actively eating or in the pool....hope that helps.

I'm curious why you think that. Will you provide your reasonings?

Because I think Disney is going to be very cautious about removing mask mandates and at least around where I live, masks are required in all stores and public businesses. Disney’s HHI resort is fairly small and pretty much always booked so there’s no fear of keeping customers away so to speak. I also think it behooves Disney to be consistent between WDW and HHI in their Covid response since they’re only about 325 miles apart - they wouldn’t want WDW visitors whining along the lines of ‘why do I have to wear a mask here when I didn’t have to wear one in S.C.’...

Yup, I agree-Disney's going to be one of the very last to remove mask mandates-they've got a lot to lose if someone decides they got Covid on a Disney trip and want to sue.

I keep hearing people say when you cross the bridge you have to wear the mask. That is not 100% true. When you are on Disney property, yes, you need to wear the mask, but the boardwalk area at the marina is not Disney property, so you can be on that side of the bridge and not have your mask on. I was there last June/July and in building 29, we go for a walk in the morning and come back, cross over the bridge and walk along the marina until the end and then would only have to have the mask on for a short time before getting back to the building.

Yeah, we were there in March and the CM at the front desk actually said that once you exit Disney property you do not have to wear a mask outside. So, no, you do not have to wear a mask outside once you are off of Disney property. And in fact, Disney has signs all along the line with the marina that say that too. The signs seemed so silly to us, they literally said something like once you cross the line in the pavement you have to put on a mask. Our kids had a good laugh jumping over and back maskless by the signs and saying, “oooo, I touched the boat!”

This is how it was in October. My DH and I rented bikes. We wore our masks until we crossed the bridge, and then took them off while riding. Of course, when we went in anywhere (which was limited to maybe 3-4 places), we put our masks on. The issue with fishing is you cannot fish around the marina, so we are limited to the fishing pier at the Disney resort where we have to wear masks. I totally believe there are some good fishing spots around the island, but my DSs only want to fish at the Disney fishing pier for some reason.

I just read that WDW is removing hand-washing stations in the parks. Many of you say they will remain strict to avoid a lawsuit, but with the relaxed mask policy for pictures and now this, it makes me not so sure.

There is currently a mask policy in place on Hilton Head Island through May 16. The town council will meet prior to that time to discuss and vote whether to extend that.

Beaufort County voted this week to end the mask policy for unincorporated areas of the county which has no affect on Hilton Head Island. All county offices still have a mask mandate in place besides the Hilton Head Island policy.

The DVC Resort cannot change their current policy until the town modifies their current policy and, even then, the resort may still continue their policy as their own choice.

Hilton Head currently has no Covid patients in the local hospital and the vaccine continues to be distributed to anyone 16 years old and older. Distribution is available in pharmacies on the island, in Hospital related services in the county and even in the local free clinic here on the island.

Stay tuned for at least the local policy after May 16. If the mask mandate continues for Hilton Head Island, the DVC Resort will need to continue their policy too.The current policy applies to anyone entering a business. When in a restaurant, masks may be removed once seated at your table (inside or outside). Masks are not required when outside in general unless the business or resort has their own requirement.Masks are required for shoppers as well as staff in business establishments.

There is signage on the road onto Hilton Head indicating the mask policy. Masks are NOT required on the beaches. Compliance has been generally good on the island.

Disney could ditch the outside mask policy today at their HHI resort and join the rest of HHI in allowing masks outdoors.

I read the mask mandate for Hilton Head and it only requires masks indoors. Disney requires masks outdoors also, so why couldn’t they change that and still be in compliance with the town?

They are fully in compliant with the Town of Hilton Head's policy. The DVC Resort has opted to expand their own policy beyond the town's, as is their right.

End-of-Story.

The state of South Carolina has never had a mask mandate in place. Individual counties, cities, and towns have opted to initial and enforce their own policies. Hilton Head Island is one of those communities with such a policy and Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort is within the area covered by that policy and even made their own policy a little more exclusive.

Obviously, Disney has expanded their mask mandate beyond the local government’s mask mandate. But your previous post implied that Disney’s mask policy was simply a result of the local government’s mask policy. That is not true. Disney’s policy goes beyond what local government requires.
