the mashed potatoes were sitting on the counter when I got up this morning, I think they were left out for like 10 hours. Smelled and looked ok, (they were covered with foil)I put them back in the fridge...will they be ok? Mind you my DH was raised in farm country and thinks butter should be left on the conter and not refrigerated, so we know what he will say. Thanks!

I wouldn't eat them. Then again, I don't eat leftover mashed potatoes anyway. I don't eat anything left out overnight if it's supposed to be refrigerated. It goes directly in the trash.

I wouldn't eat them either. Food poisoning is NO fun.

I'd only be concerned if there was milk in it. Butter would be OK.

The butter part would be okay but the other parts of the food (the milk AND the potatoes) should not sit out for more than a few hours. All food has some bacteria on it and without refrigeration, it will GROW and GROW and mulitply. Food poisoning is not worth some mashed potatoes.

I'd throw them away. Milk, heat then no refrigeration-ewwww.

Potatoes are cheap- toss them! And that comes from someone that leaves the butter on the counter.

my friend leaves his butter on the counter too, it grosses me out....but then I also refridgerate peanut butter and maple syrup once they are opened!

Coming from someone that has had food poisoning...don't risk it! Trust me you don't want food poisoning. It's not worth the risk!! Toss them.

Throw it out. During yesterday's meal, cross contamination from other foods might have happened to the mashed potatos, so along with those bacteria, you also have the milk and butter to worry about. It's not worth getting sick over.

Throw them out. You should never eat food that has been in the "danger zone" for more than two hours. The "danger zone" is 40-140 degrees. Foods that should be cold should be stored in temps below 40 degrees and foods that should be hot should be held at 140 degrees or above.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Can you tell I'm a cook? LOL

Toss them. I remember reading a story about a guy who ate a baked potato that he had left out on the counter a few hours. It landed him in the hospital and then a rehab hospital for about six months!

Throw it out! Mashed potatoes are very akaline and bacteria loves to grow in an akaline enviroment!

I'd eat 'em! I'm not very anal about things being left out in general, unless they contain eggs/poultry. I'm sure its bad and all ... but whatever ...

It's been about 2 years since I took servesafe... it was 40 - 140 degrees back then... I can tell its time I went back to school :p

But anyway I have to agree with most and say DO NOT eat them! I mean why endanger yourself and your family for a few mashed potatos!

Happy Black Friday everyone!!

I wouldn't eat them because of the milk. Butter, however, is shelf stable for 2-3 days.
