I'm not a gun person and don't understand the passion for them. However, I understand it is a right in this country. I'd at least like to see some kind of frequent registration and licensing requirement that takes into account the owner's mental health.

You nailed the problem. Maryland was one f the worst states for updating the federal registry tracking people with mental health problems that are not allowed t own guns.

No I dont, but it seems a lot of people do. It is not the job of the police to protect you, that is your responsibility.

The point is that police CAN'T be everywhere.

On the point of mental condition, we have had a system in place for nearly 2 decades to prevent purchase of any new firearm by criminals and the mentally unstable, or used firearms purchased through a dealer. It also applies to private party sales of used guns via Internet purchases. The only ones exempt are private party face to face sale of used guns, and that's primarily because there is no way to enforce that. The states have however done a HORRIBLE job of reporting to the BATF, and the Feds a horrible job trying to correct this.

The problem with "mentally unstable" is how that can be defined. Will it mean anyone one on an anti depressant? How about something for ADHD? PTSD? I guess it can mean anything the next politican wants it to mean. It could be done right, but I dont think it will.

As it stands today, you have to have your day in court. The Va Tech shooter for example had been declared unfit by a state judge. But, he still passed the background check because Va did not pass that info to BATF.

Personally, I believe in due process. We have rights that should only be removed when it's been proven those rights need to be removed. But, that means some people who should be in institutions won't be, and some who shouldn't pass a background check will.

How do you know they weren't?

Reasons for all of these shootings:

1. Poor mental health services
2. Lame gun background checks
3. Too many guns in private ownership
4. Government kowtows to the NRA.

I could go on but won't because my opinions will be flamed.

My point is regarding people diagnosed with a mental illness after purchasing a gun. Many mental illnesses aren't diagnosed until a person is in their 20's. Guns also shouldn't be permitted in a home where anyone with a mental illness lives - ala sandyhook.
