I grew up in the 70's around pot. My dad smoked it all the time. It lead to abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
My home life was not all peached and cream. I always had to be careful when I had friends over to make sure dad's stash wasn't out or if he was in a BAD MOOD because the stash ran out.
I tried pot when I was very young and remember asking my parent's after why I felt like crying for no reason at all. I can think of much better highs a person can get without drugs (AKA - disney vacation!!!!)

Oh and by the way - Dad died of lung cancer Sept 5, 2001 at the age of 48. He missed out on seeing my youngest brother graduate from high school and a grandson so far. He died of cancer of the esophagus. You can't convince me it wasn't from his life choices.

But using that reasoning alcohol shouldn't be legal.

You're absolutely right. But this thread didn't ask for my alcohol opinions.

I wouldn't smoke it, but by legalizing it, the quality would be regulated. Plus, it could be good for our economy - a new agriculture source. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Yes, I think it should be legalized.....and no, I don't smoke it....alcohol is my drug of choice. :)

Never tried it, no real interest. But I strongly believe we need less goverment and more liberty. Unless something poses a serious risk to society in total, get the goverment out of the business of telling people how to live their lives.

I do not smoke it but I do support it's use for medical purposes.

One comment I want to make is that it seems like a double standard that marijuana is illegal while alcohol is not. Alcohol is much more dangerous than pot.

DH both smokes and drinks and if I had the choice, I would rather him smoke pot then drink. DH is never the same person when he has been drinking a few beers, but he is just the same person I married after he smokes a joint, he is more relaxed and calm which drinking makes him mean and violent, so yes I would leagalize it.

There is a misunderstanding that pot is a "safe" drug. It's not, and it shouldn't be legal.
I agree. There is NO safe drug -- not even caffeine, which we allow our children to have in Coke and Mountain Dew. A kid at my school just ODed on Advil -- yes, over-the-counter Advil. I hear she was foaming at the mouth, had her stomach pumped, etc.

I don't understand dragging alcohol into the equation. Yes, alcohol is a big problem in our society. But what does one problem have to do with the other? Should we just accept one as the "lesser of two evils"? What ever happened to making the best possible choices for ourselves and our society?

As it is now, people WILL abuse marijuana; however, the fact that it's illegal at least sends the message that it's dangerous. If it's made legal, we're essentially saying that there's no harm in it. That's a lie.

Seriously. The last time I responded to a thread on this topic I went on an absolute rampage.

Rich::

Yes you did and thanks for not doing it again.

With all due respect, alcohol and nicotine aren't safe drugs either. But they are safer than pot, mainly because there are regulations regarding its distribution and safe places to but them in (liquor stores & other retail stores)

I'll say it again, instead of spending money trying (in vain) to stop the distribution of mj, LETS GET SOME TAX MONEY FROM POT.

Somewhat OT -What does it smell like?

Once on the street it smelled like garbage that had been rotting in the sun for days. Someone told me it was the smell of pot.

I find hard to believe that something that has such revolting smell would be so popular.

Just a fyi - it is very difficult to OD on ibuprofen and very rarely done unintentionally.

Not true. There are some states where motorcyclist are not required to wear helmets....does this give the illusion of safety? I don't think so. ;) It is not the government's job to protect us from our own stupidity.

Amen. Yes, marijuana has some dangers, but so do a lot of other legal things. I would think your chances of getting injured or dying would be much greater from driving than from marijuana. Adults should be able to make their own decisions.

I spent a lot of time in college totally baked. I have friends and their wives that still smoke pot. I haven't in a couple of years, it's lost it's appeal. but it's no 'gateway' drug. alcohol has inspired me to make the worst choices in my life, not pot. the first time I tried pot was when I was drunk. I still drink a few beers, but I was able to walk away from some of the recreational drugs altogether. but no, I don't think it should be legal.

First of all, denying a ill person a substance that has been proven will bring them some relief is simply ludicrous. As for legalizing it for the masses? I don't see any problem with it. It should have the same laws and restrictions as alchohol though. No driving, even slightly stoned, and you should only be allowed to have enough for your personal use. If 21 years is deemed the age of maturity for the purchase of alchohol, I can't see much difference in that and pot. Think of the revenue for the government! Will it happen? No way. We are much too socially conservative a country for that. We won't even let a terminally ill cancer patient have it on their deathbed. Maybe someday, but not in the near future.
