An exclusive sneak preview of Guardians of the Galaxy (a Marvel film being released in August) will be occurring at the ABC Sound Studio (where Sounds Dangerous used to be) starting on July 4. It will be in the 3D. More info HERE.

Most interesting of course is that this is the first time Marvel has really made it into the WDW theme parks. It's legal cause the UOR contract only covers a few of Marvel's key heroes (none of which in this) but could this be the beginning of something larger? ;) Well, I can tell you this is certainly being used not only to promote the film but also as a testing ground to see if these second-level Marvel characters are worth bringing to WDW. What Marvel would you like to see in the parks that UOR doesn't have?

Honestly? I don't see a very bright future for this story, but hopefully I'll be wrong and WDW will finally include something from Marvel. Big Hero 6 sounds promising, but after Frozen's huge success... Who knows?

This probably explains the decision to do a film based on lesser known GOTG. It never occurred to me that Universal probably didn't have the rights and Disney would be free to use them in the parks. A GOTG ride would be great and I can see Rocket Raccoon being a favorite.I would like to know just what characters Universal holds the rights to.

Please no superheroes in Disney World!

Just give a look at the existing rides they have at Universal's parks, and the movies that Disney/Marvel don't control ... ie, Spiderman and X Men. That's your best place to start. Given they way the rights work, if somebody else hasn't used it in the last 7 years, then it's pretty safe to assume that Disney/Marvel has it ... at least as a rule of thumb.

Please no superheroes in Disney World!

Why ever not? Especially at Studios, which could clearly use the boost. They already have successfully used supers in the new upgrades on the cruise ships and that seems to be very popular.

I have no doubt in my tiny little superannuated brain that Disney can't wait to put in a potential money maker like the Marvel characters into the parks. I just hope they will confine them to DHS. Its the only park where they would reasonably fit.

You ask a question that likely many of us don't even know the parameters... Can you please list out all the characters that Universal owns and the rest of the characters that Disney has rights to?

Nice of Disney to offer this, but use my park time to watch a 2-hour movie? I can do that when I'm not paying $60+pp/day :rotfl:

Ultimately watching this movie would mean missing 4-6 attractions at DHS (or getting kids to bed too late, which translates to being at the next park 2 hours after RD. No thanks!)

I dom't think I made this clear, but this will probably more of a 20-minute short snippet of the film rather than the whole feature much like they did with Maleficent.

They are not playing the whole movie as far as I know. It will be just a snippet, just like they did with Maleficent and other previous movies. It won't take more than 20-30 minutes, I'm guessing. I wouldn't watch it anyway, but yeah, they won't take two precious hours of your day ;)

Well I never understood the whole 20 minute thing... So you watch the movie there and then what? Skip the first 20 minutes when you go to the movie theater or rent the movie later?

Do you get a discount at the movie theater for showing up 20 mins late? What happens if you start to get into the movie? Nothing like a to.be.continued with a movie.

If I could just throw this out there as well.

Right now, there doesn't really seem to be any immediate plans to bring Marvel heroes to WDW. The idea is that if this film and preview proves to be popular or at least resonate with audiences then they'll consider bringing these characters to WDW. Right now, WDW, in their eyes, has enough with AVATAR coming to DAK and Star Wars Land in the works at DHS (plus a small Pixar Place expansion). There was a lot more pushing to get the Marvel park rights or do something with these second-level Marvel characters at WDW before Disney acquired Lucasfilm. They now feel that's viable enough to revitalize DHS while competing (in conjunction with AVATAR) with WWoHP and Diagon Alley, which is why you see them testing all these new smaller entertainment and character concepts at SWW this year. More on that HERE.

Disneyland is a whole other cup of tea though. I mean the placement of this preview is no coincidence: Tomorrowland in Disneyland: the place where they are hoping to eventually bring in some of the most popular Marvel characters in futuristic settings and attractions to re-invigorate DL's Tomorrowland, which is kind of in need of that after the removal of their PeopleMover many years ago.

Overall, the idea with placing the preview at DL is proving that there is enough interest in Marvel in general (this is just the latest in a series of temporary Marvel experiences to go into DL's Tomorrowland) to go forward with existing plans (something management needs before they can sign the check), while WDW's is more about exploring the potential in these specific characters themselves for future development in a post-SWL DHS.

The Maleficent preview they showed at Hollywood studios was 9 minutes longer. Showed about 4 minutes of a scene in the movie. Then it was a little of behind the scenes and interview with cast

And Universal put out something a few days ago saying to come say Hi and Bye to some of their characters out in the park, like Spider-Man, as the Marvel licensing they hold is expiring I guess. So they won't be having those characters walking around anymore

A week or so ago I saw this quote and it had me literally laughing out loud (the verbiage isn't exact, but the message definitely is):

DC Comics and Warner Brothers won't do a Wonder Woman movie because it would be too confusing. Meanwhile, Marvel and Disney are all "Here's a raccoon. With a machine gun."

:rotfl:

Can't WAIT to see that raccoon.

I have mixed feelings on this, because I think that the only people who will be willing to "settle" for the lesser known characters are the diehard fans. On the other hand, if they can do promotions and tie it in with movies that might work. For example... I'm not sure what studio is doing the Antman movie now that they've finally settled on a director. For the time being at least. *eyeroll* But if Antman being in the park is tied into the release of the movie, I think that could work.

It doesn't expire.

The theme park rights for Japan are under a long-term deal, said to last into the 2020s, while the Orlando rights are in perpetuity, meaning that Disney never will be able to secure the rights to use its Marvel characters in Walt Disney World's theme parks until it can convince Universal to give up those rights.

So instead of saying Marvel is coming to WDW!!, would it be more accurate to say some secondary Marvel characters will be quickly passing thru DHS in the form of a special movie trailer before the movie hits the theaters? And then its back to business as usual. Have to admit that I would have to be badly in need of an AC break to waste park time for this.

Marvel is "kind of" coming to WDW.:)

In the DPB post, there is no Marvel logo and no use of the word "Marvel".:)

This is because that infamous contract, which states that no one else's marketing can actually use that brand other than Universal's.

With this, it's fun to see how Disney skirts around this contract. I can definitively tell you that this is just the beginning of much larger skirting to come.
