Hey guys, I'm hoping someone here can help me with this question because I'm sooo confused!

So I was reading an article about changing your last name after you get married, and the guy's first tip was to use your new married name on your marriage license.

Does that mean that I apply as the name I want to use after marriage - i.e. Kimberley MyHusbandsLastName? Or do I still apply as Kimberley MyLastName?

Any help/experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've not heard of that but I'm no expert. Thats not what you name is now, so that makes me nervous. Maybe that implies you can just change everything easier? But we didn't do that. I'm just downloading forms and working on it. I think SSN is first. But again, my name wasn't Lisa Hislastname so I wouldn't feel comfortable with that if someone asked mevto write it!

Good luck!!

The name on your drivers license is the name that will be on your marriage license, at least that's how it was when we applied.

Once you get married and receive the sealed/stamped copy of your license you can go to the SS office and change it, then the DL office. I've never heard of applying in your soon to be name, only your name at the time of application.

Ok, that's what I thought. My friend who just got married here in Florida a few weeks ago said to apply with my current name. That article was just confusing. I guess he said that it would make things easier, but I thought that I needed to apply with the name that is on my driver's license.

Thank you guys so much!

As posted above you can't use your married name to apply for your wedding license since the Notary uses your driver's license to prove who you are.

After the wedding, when we got the signed and sealed license back, I took the original to my local SSN office along with the paperwork that you download before you go. It took all of 5 minutes for her to put in the request. I received my new card with my new name in about a week. I still haven't gotten a new driver's license yet but that is the next step.

It is still strange for me to use my new name. I always have to stop and think before I sign my name now. It took me about 3 weeks after the wedding to write my new name for the first time.... :goodvibes
