Marriage Equality!

Following your train of thought, why do Christians still need the rainbow as a symbol?

The whole subject of who "owns" particular symbols gets crazy. Try all these campaigns with various colored ribbons. I've even heard of lawsuits between charities to "protect the brand".

As for the rainbow, the University of Hawaii did change the name of their men's sports teams to "Warriors" when it used to be "Rainbows" or sometimes "Rainbow Warriors". I heard that it was in response to some of the insults they got on the road.

I wish I could understand why people are up in arms about this decision. I mean why do you care who marries who? How does it affect you in your daily life? It is frankly none of your business what someone else does. Live and let live!

It's pretty straightforward. It is a religious issue for them (doesn't matter which religion). Those that feel that way believe that their religious doctrine is THE right way, that it should rule the land, and those that do not follow are damned. As long as their values are running the laws in this country, they actually don't care all that much if YOU don't follow them. However, we are coming into times where many of their religious values are no longer allowed to oppress people and they are feeling and seeing that their religious doctrine is no longer the guiding force for politics and law. It scares them and threatens their belief system and that is very unsettling.

Why? That makes no sense. Do you think all of Canada thinks as you?

Perhaps it's because there is also marriage equality in Canada? So if you really are so convicted in your beliefs you wouldn't set foot there. I'm surprised you didn't know that. I have been very cracked up seeing people threaten to move to Canada over this issue. They might be in for a wee bit of a surprise.

And, I believe yesterday was one of our finest hours. Regardless of whether or not you believe in same sex marriage, the Supreme Court upheld a bedrock principle of America -- there is no tyranny of the majority. All Americans get equal protection and treatment under the law.

Of course I knew that. But why would you think that would keep one from setting foot in a country that has gay marriage? Or stop someone from buying property or moving there. One has nothing to do with the other. IMO.

If you are still willing to invest in a country that allows same-sex marriage, why would you think yesterday's decision was such a step backwards for the USA?

A good decision. One that will unite the country. Kind of like Roe v. Wade did.

Yesterday my sons and I had an impromptu celebration party for our cousin and her girlfriend. During the party, her mother and I reminded them that even though we are very happy that they have the right to marry, they are only 19 and we will beat them if they do anything stupid! Today my boys are so excited to go to The Houston Pride Parade to support them. I think that the parade is going to be huge today.

Cute.

Exactly what would unite the country? NOT giving people equal rights? There's not a single thing that is not debatable, that brings everyone together in agreement. It's about rights.

I just find it so astounding that anyone even CARES what consenting adults do. And then I think about my elderly mother and a conversation I had with her.

Me: Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?
Mom: NNNNOOOO!
Me: Why not?
Mom: I just don't.
Me: But WHY?? You must have a reason.
Mom: Because I don't want to look at my priest and think about him doing THAT.
Me: (suppressing astonishment/laughter) Why are you looking at ANYONE and thinking about them doing THAT?? Do you think about ME and DH doing "that"? Because, like, we do.
Mom: NNNOOOO.

Again, why does anyone care? IF it's a sin, then there's only One Judge, not politicians and other "leaders."

I, for real, guffawed at your Mom story! Thanks for sharing that.

AWESOME MAR!!!

33 years ago today my husband and I started our journey together , so long ago I was 2 weeks out of high school.
Tonight we toast to "EQUAL LOVE!":love:

A lot of places can't even handle when women have a different last name than their spouse; I can't imagine what a nightmare this is going to be for bureaucrats everywhere. (Too bad for them, suck it up and deal.)

To expand on the rainbow point, does this mean as a straight man that I can now enjoy a nice brunch with mimosas? Will I be issued a makeover coupon in the mail or do I need to see a local salon to get my chest waxed?
You've always been able to. Now you can feel comfortable doing it.
The moon is yours. I'm claiming Pluto. I see it as a great investment opportunity on the off chance it gets promoted back to full planet status.
Dibs on Saturn's rings!
I'm just saying if we give gays the right to marry they should give us Clay Aiken back in return. Some people want to normalize relations with Cuba but I say not until they return Elian. I don't care if he's a grown man now.
What if we don't want Clay Aiken back?
She can have it as long as us Irish folk get to keep our pot of gold!
Catching the leprechaun doesn't automatically grant it to the capturer any more? Bah. What's with all these "traditions" going down the tubes at the same time?
We shan't be paying Disney's prices to get married, but we WILL be honeymooning there :) Thanks for the kind words.
If you consider reconsidering,
.....you should look around the forum
......for a member who is also a CM
.....and who also happens to be
.....a JP, and who not only performs
.....wedding ceremonies discreetly onsite
.....but also recommends locations
.....and send this person a PM

I am proud to have seen this happen in my lifetime, along with a few other key milestones for our country. I'm also thankful that I'm alive at a time I could learn about milestones that happened before me (suffrage, the end of slavery, etc). One can only wonder and marvel at the advancements yet to come for our great country and the world. A day when color is meaningless? Acceptance is universal? Will we someday see peace in the middle east? A cure for cancer?

People talk about hope, but yesterday's decision gives me actual hope that anything can be accomplished!

:jumping1:

Was today the last session for the Supreme Court this season? I thought they went thru June 30, and didn't expect a ruling until Monday or Tuesday. But the earlier the better. :thumbsup2

No, there are a few more decisions (4 or 5 left if I recall) which will come out Monday. I was surprised we got this one before the last day too, nice us them to give us the weekend to celebrate :p

A good decision. One that will unite the country. Kind of like Roe v. Wade did.

I hope in time this will unite the country. Religious people are entitled to their views on the religious institution of marriage, and now that the legal question has been settled regarding laws on civil marriage, maybe some of the hostility can die down. The decision reconfirmed a clergy members right not to perform a ceremony, as it should. It also permits those clergy who do believe Christianity has room for gay marriage to practice their faith. People can hold whatever religious beliefs they want. The legal matter was just adding anger, oppression and to the situation. With that behind us, perhaps a conversation can move forward in a more helpful way.

I mean, 50 years hasn't solved racism, but putting the legal equality issue to rest improved that conversation.
