We tried it years ago, but the counselor got my husband angry on the first visit. After my DH stormed out of his office, the counselor told me to please apologize to my husband. He explained that since insurance has a limit, (I think some allow only three visits, for example), he felt the need to push more than he would normally, if given more time.
So, I guess my advice would be to research your coverage, and if you're willing to pay for more visits than allowed in your plan, be up front about discussing it. I should have insisted that we try again with a different counselor, but my DH had found his out, and that was it.
