OK, I'm sure this is a dumb question, and I don't want any details, as I haven't read the book. But, if I go see this movie when it opens, will I end up bawling my head off because of something dog related? It looks so cute, but I'm afraid it will get me. I am still recovering from Martian Child and I am Legend LOL.

A simple yes or no answer is good...:rotfl:

skipped the book and will skip the movie - it can't end well for the dog if you know what I mean

Thanks!!! I will have to think long and hard...he's a lab not a retriever like ours was, but big yellow dogs get me more than the others too.

It's a wonderful story about the life of a dog.

A long life, and his entire life. One of the most cry-worthy books I've ever read. And I hate to cry.

I've never owned a dog and I cried! I LOVE that book.

"Marley & Me" is a must read for anyone who has ever given his/her heart to a dog ... or a cat ... or a rabbit ... or a fish ... or a hamster ...

Crap...I'm gonna hafta read this book aren't I??? Would this be good to take my 18 yr old son and his 20 yr old friend to on Christmas Day?? They are "dog people" Will my DH (the cryer) be ok? We have a "yellow dog" that was the only survivor of a house-fire 8 yrs ago...(ok...I'm a cryer too LOL)

I think this is one of the movies that will make grown men especially cry. They might not want to see it with Mom.

I don't know about the movie (which I will see), but you must read the book. Make sure you read the original, and not an adaption of the screenplay (if there is such a thing out there). John Grogan wrote the original book.

If nothing else, the guys can drool over Jennifer Aniston. I guess it's a win-win situation for everyone!

I'm thinking we're ALL goin~tears or not (I know..I'm a mean Mom) Hopefully the Jennifer Aniston factor will keep them all happy:rolleyes1 Plus I'm askin for this book for Christmas :thumbsup2

Yes the book will make you cry but......it is the story of a dog who had quite a long life and it is part of life when you own a dog or cat, we rejoice in their life that they spent with us but always know that their life will not be as long as ours. Marley had a wonderful full life, many other folks would not have put up with some of his antics but IMO it is worth seeing, although sometimes movies do not follow exactly the same as the book.....I learned that especially with the Horse Whisperer.
Marley's life does not end in a tragic way.

PHEW! Thank you~this will make it much easier for us(esp DH):thumbsup2 (Oh and we have put up with many "antics" and love them all the same~teenagers AND dogs LOL)

The dog in my avatar is as much like Marley as I've ever known. I have found dollar bills in poop, heads off baby dolls, chewed up sippy cups & shoes. BUT We love her dearly, Now, she is 5 years old and our 4th child.

One day we will cry terribly for her.

Can't wait to see the movie.

My beloved (black) lab is named Marley. I don't know if I can bring myself to watch it after reading the book, which was hard enough. The trailers are cute though - Marley was a rescue at 1 1/2 so I don't have puppy memories of him, but we do have another black lab puppy named Daisy who I'm reminded of when I see the puppy in the trailers splayed out eating spilled food off the kitchen floor. :lmao: I think DH and I might go see it with the caveat that we can walk out at any time, but I'm also just not sure I want to put myself through it. I'm not really one for horror movies or tearjerkers - I always end up thinking, why did I do this to myself? And this one might hit too close to home.

The book is excellent, but it covers the WHOLE life of the dog so it is sad. When I say sad, I mean that I cried hysterically until I made myself sick sad. THEN I got out of bed and sobbed into the fur of my 3 dogs before I cried myself to sleep.

The general public should not be subjected to that in the theater so we'll be renting it.

:rotfl: I completely understand. I cried a bunch as well.

My Dad said he was near to finishing it, and would do it on the plane. I told him not to, but he didn't listen of course. He said he was in between two other grown men, and couldn't stop crying!

Well, I warned him! ;)

Hmmmm...Ok...this sounds like me...I'm re-thinking the whole taking DH (the cryer), DS-18 (dog person) and DS's friend-20 (possible dog person) and me~BIG dog person AND cryer:rotfl: Sounds like a rental for sure:thumbsup2 Especially on Christmas Day!

You really hit the nail on the head with your description.

We had a yellow lab (Spencer) who died almost 3 years ago. When I first picked up the Marley book I had never even heard of it. After the first few pages I knew the book was written quite a few years after they got Marley. I was going to stop reading it but I just couldn't put it down. Boy did I cry. My 9 year old is reading Marley - the kids version. She is about halfway thru. I'm not sure how she is going to take the ending. :sad1: She does know what happens though. Hopefully she doesn't take after me.
