We are attending the Candlelight Processional on the night that Marlee Matlin is narrating. I had no idea who this was so after some google research I understand that she is a deaf actress who can speak a limited amount. I don't understand, how can a deaf somewhat mute person narrate the show? Does she have an interpreter who speaks while she signs? Also, when people who are somewhat mute talk they sound a little strange. Wouldn't this be distracting? Please don't flame me for this post, I am really just trying to understand how the show will work, whether she will have an interpreter, etc. I don't in any way mean for this post to sound derogatory, just trying to understand the logistics! :thumbsup2

We caught Marlee last year for the first time and enjoyed her.

She signed the presentation and had a very enthusiastic interpreter deliver the story. I don't know if she's only partially deaf, but she was rocking and rolling to the music, perhaps the vibrations.

At the conclusion was the only time she spoke when she said God bless you all, and God bless America.

Nothing distracting about her except that she's awfully darned attractive.

Yep. We went last year as well. The man who read for her is someone who is always with her, at least when you see her on TV. It was really very neat, and very moving to see her sign. You kind of get a two-for-one. Have a good time!

We saw Marlee last year, and she was wonderful. She had a man who spoke fo her while she signed, but it wasn't distracting. I can't explain why, I would think it would be, but I was focused on her. What was fascinating was the way she was really into the music. I guess she could feel the vibration. She was amazed by the choir (you could see it in her face) and she moved with the music. At the end she spoke a few words. :thumbsup2

PS I used to not like her(children of a lesser god, law and order), but now after seeing her in the CP I do.

One additional note for the OP, there is always someone signing for whoever is narrating, think you will find the signing beautiful and very moving.

We also really liked Marlee when we saw her 2 years ago. She was so enthusiastic and obviously enjoying herself, and it was neat to see all of the different signs. It made us look at the Christmas story in a little different way, too.

It's amazing how seeing someone in this environment can make you a fan.

I never really thought much about Harry Hamlin one way or the other. Loved Clash of the Titans, but never really thought much about him otherwise. However, after seeing him at the CP, I became an instant fan. He was great and SO complimentary of everyone he was working with. That really endeared him to me.

And yes - I voted for him on DWTS. :p I know, I know. He wasn't great and that's what's wrong with these shows (people voting for contestants who aren't the best, necessarily), but after CP, I just couldn't NOT vote for him.

I'm not a big MM fan, either. Perhaps seeing her at the CP would change my opinion. :thumbsup2

I heard many people say they didn't like Eartha Kitt at the CP, though. Wonder what that was all about...

Marlee Matlin hosted Sunday's episode of Extreme Home Make Over. It was a 2 hour episode and she had her interpeter with her (I think his name is Jack, if I remember correctly.) She seems like a really sweet and caring woman, and she can speak, just not perfectly clear. She was running around the house at the end of the episode with Ty's bullhorn hollering about 2 hours left, so she can talk.

I think she's wonderful, my DD is deaf (has a Cochlear Implant) and I think it's wonderful that they have interpreters for those who are hearing impaired. I love how Disney works with all types of disabilities!! :sunny:

I have always hoped to see her at one of the CP's I do each year, never have. Hopefully some year.
