Marking Water Bottles?

Every time we go on vacation we get a few cases of water. We then end up with a lot of water bottles that have a kid sized sip taken out of them but no one will claim them. Generally just writing a name on the bottle does not work (it wipes off, etc). Does anyone have a cheap idea to mark water bottles? We used hairbands one year and that worked pretty well but with the other group we go with, we would need at least 12 different colors. It would need to be something easy enough for kids to do on their own and then keep track of. I was looking at can sleeves because then everyone could have their name and color but not sure if that is the best route. Opinions?

We actually used hair ties this time, too. They were some that I had made from plain elastics and "shank" buttons (the kind with a loop on the back instead of holes):

I used a piece of thin wire (like from bead crafts) to thread the elastic through the tiny button shank. Then I just pulled one end of the loop through the other and tightened it.

There were only three of us, so we just needed Mickey, Minnie, and "none" - but you can find all kinds of buttons to suit everyone in your party!

Sharpies are your friend! We're a family of 6, we do this when on vacation or just for a day at the beach. We also do this at parties, when we have a bunch of plastic cups and a couple dozen guests.

Write names/initials on the top of the cap with a sharpie.

I would add bottom of water bottle too. This has helped here at home with "not me" water bottles. I have recently purchased a zero water pitcher for the refrigerator. That is working great!

I always throw a hair scrunchy on mine... even at home. Grosses me out If I even think someone took a sip.

We are a family of 5, and we also do the sharpie on the bottle cap at home. It’s cheap, easy and effective.

We have a small travel sized sharpie that we keep in the backpack for marking water bottle tops.

We are a sharpie on the cap family and have never had it come off - but I really like the hair elastic idea! - especially with the buttons! Super Cute! We could do that in the future as well!

we bring a Sharpie as well; also use that to mark our refillable mugs too.
For the reusable stuff I have a bunch of Mabel’s Labels (local GTA company) that I use for the kids, plus some with my mobile number on it. Works pretty well.

Make every kid carry his/her own water bottle. Get a bunch of those nylon cinch backpacks on Amazon and hand one to each child.

Family of five, soccer mom, sub teacher, I have not once ever had a problem using sharpie on the cap, even with 25 first graders on field day, every one was marked and all knew which was which
Even the slick surface caps like Gatorade, still stays on
