Actually the festivities in New Orleans start 2 weekends prior to Mardi Gras, meaning the weekend of February 22nd. And some the suburbs have parades even earlier than that.
If you really want to be technical, the season starts every year on Twelfth Night (January 6) with private events such as balls, dinner dances, etc. The public events like the parades start 2 weekends prior.
I'm getting so I almost miss New Orleans. Someone slap me please! *I couldn't wait to move out of there but the idea of going back there for school doesn't sound as unappealing as it once did*
